Elmwood Park, Illinois was founded in 1868 by Captain James K. Hennigan as a hunting and fishing ground for the White Stockings. The first Clayshooting Contest took place on October 10th of that year at the park and it was won by Captain John A. Fitzgerald of Elmwood Springs, Missouri. After Captain Hennigan's death in 1876, his son-in-law Prentice Wadsworth became the owner and operator of the park. In 1903, Wadsworth donated land to Elmwood Park Cemetery which enabled shooters to target shoot from there also. In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Elmwood Park and gave a speech on American gun culture which has been preserved in History Museum located inside of Elmwood Park today. Today, Elmwood Park is an important shooting destination for both experienced shooters and beginner alike with over 900 acres of forested terrain available for target practice range use or simply unfolding for a day filled with activities like hiking, biking, swimming & fishing!

Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1875 by John A. Elmwood and his wife Emma. The Elmwoods made their home on a tract of land that they donated to the town. The first post office was established in 1876. In 1907, the name of the town was changed from Elmwood to Elmwood Park after a donation from Mrs. Lillie Bogan (the widow of Major General James P.) Elmwood and his wife donated $1,000 for an elementary school in the town which opened on October 7, 1907. Elmwood Park is a small, rural community in the Kane County, Illinois area. It was founded in 1868 by a group of farmers who purchased land from the state of Illinois. The community today consists of a few hundred residents and two schools, both of which are used for elementary and secondary education. Elmwood Park was once a thriving agricultural town that produced hay, wheat, oats and other crops. Today, the only industry present in the community is farming, which has declined over the years due to technological advances and changes in consumer preferences. In addition to its rural setting, Elmwood Park also features several park amenities that provide opportunities for residents to enjoy nature as well as participate in activities such as basketball, soccer and bowling. The history of Elmwood Park begins with its founding date. A group of farmers purchased land from the state of Illinois on July 1st 1868. The original inhabitants were Methodists who had arrived from Kentucky following religious persecution there at the hands of Catholic missionaries. The town was named after John Wesley Elmwood (1765-1837), an American preacher who had helped found Methodism in England during the early 1800s. In 1870, when Elmwood Park was established, it consisted of just twenty-five acres total; however, within five years it had grown to nearly three thousand acres with fourteen homes and seventy-six businesses scattered throughout its borders including six churches and fourteen schools*. Elmwood Park was first settled in 1831 by Potawatomi Indians. The name Elmwood is derived from the word "elm" which means wood, and "park" because it was once a piece of land donated to the town by the family of Amos Brown. In 1881, Elmwood Park was incorporated as a village. In 1903, Elmwood Park became a city and in 1965 it merged with neighboring Crystal City to form Chicago Heights.
