Elmwood Park is a small town in the county of Douglas, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Elmwood Park was John Pemberton in 1836. He and his wife, Sarah, founded a log cabin on a site that now includes Elmwood Park Elementary School and Community Center. Mrs. Pemberton served as the first postmaster for the community. In 1849, James Henson purchased land in what would become Elmwood Park from John Pemberton and began to build a home there. The town's first store opened in 1850 close to where present-day Elmwood Park Elementary School stands today. In 1854, local farmers established two cooperative stores which remain important parts of the town's economy to this day: One operated by Aiken & Smith and another by Fenton Bros., both located near the current intersection of Kapp Rd./Welfare Rd./Pine Hollow Rd./Lake Shore Dr.. In 1860, Jno Powers donated land east of Central Ave., now known as Powers Drive to form an open space called Forest Lawn Cemetery (now Turnagain Road). The founders of Elmwood Park had wanted forested land east of Central Ave., but were not able to get it through government channels because they did not have money enough to make a donation worthraysing tax liability at that time! Mr. Powers' gift allowed for planting trees and flowers along Forest Lawn Avenue throughout much of downtown Elmwood Park today... In 1865, Revd Archibald McDonald dedicated Stations Chapel (later renamed First United Methodist Church) on property northwest of Central Ave.. This chapel became one of Elmwood Park's most important landmarks and remains an active worship place today with services being conducted every Sunday morning since its dedication more than 125 years ago! Reverend McDonald also funded various other civic projects including streetlights between Main St./Jeffers Rd./Kapp Rd./Welfare Rd/Pine Hollow Rd.; building sidewalks; constructing fire halls; erecting public schools; and providing water service to many homes in downtown Elmwood Park during those early days! 3rd Ward Alderman John Fitzpatrick proposed that Elmood park be annexed into Peoria Township on April 15th 1889 after residents expressed their desire for such a move due to its proximity to Peoria City limits - this annexation resulted in much celebration among residents who enjoyed having access to city services without having to leave their homes! To this day many people still refer back nostalgically specifically about how easy it once was justto walk or bike right up main Street into City Limits without any hassle at all!! Today we enjoy walking/ biking around our lovely township - thank you for opening up our neighborhoods!!

The village incorporated on November 14, 1871. The Village has been through many changes over its history - most notably during World War II when it became a dumping ground for American troops and their equipment and munitions. In 1948, Elmwood Park became home to the world's first public library system with branches throughout Cook County and neighboring municipalities In 1990, Elmwood Park established itself as an educational enclave with seven elementary schools and two middle schools as well as one high school which offers classes in business (BBA), engineering (MBA), health sciences (DDS), communication studies (CUSP) and humanities/arts (HVAC). The community also includes several businesses including: J&J's Pizza Parlor, Subway sandwich restaurant, Bank of America branch, Ford dealership and First National bank among others In 2002-2003 all 7 elementary schools were completely renovated by local architect James Smith Associates with new roofs, windowsills and doors; new plumbing; updated electrical systems; brand new playgrounds/libraries; expanded bus service to community events; enlarged parking lot . Additionally 2 newly constructed high Schools- North Middle School & South High School both opened in 2003-2004 providing much needed instruction & support to students attending these 3 Schools while our current Elementary Schools continue to serve our residents
