Elmwood Park is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. The Village of Elmwood Park is located on the left bank of the Kankakee River east of Chicago. It is part of the Cook County government. The first settler in Elmwood Park was John Hannon who arrived in 1836 from Erie, Pennsylvania. He and his family built a log cabin near present-day Elmwood Park on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1839, Hannon's son Samuel founded what would become Elmwood Park schools as a result of his father's donation to that effect. In 1852, John McLaughlin settled in Elmwood Park and became its first postmaster and treasurer. Three years later he raised money to build a two-story schoolhouse on Wabash Avenue which served as both community hall and school until it burned down in 1862 while McLaughlin was away on military service. A new two-story schoolhouse was built on Wabash Avenue between State Street and Randolph Road in 1865 by Jno Nolen for $4,500 funded by subscription from local farmers and citizens alike. It served as the high school for many years before being replaced by current facilities in 1951 when Elmwood park high school opened its doors to students from grades 9 through 12 after years of planning and fundraising spearheaded by Mrs. Florence Crowley (1914-2006). In 1902, Mrs. Coyle donated land to be used for a public park which eventually became known as "Elmwood Park." A bandstand graced this site with model railroad tracks dating back to 1904 when Mr. & Mrs.(Husband) Arthur Ransom donated them along with several pieces of furniture including an engine tender locomotive number 5347 "The Missouri Star" which had been abandoned at an auction held at Tinley Park High School some time earlier that year! The trackage now forms part of Loop 202/I-94 Business Route 717 just south of Interstate 94 exit 176B off I-694 northbound lanes westbound lanes! The Ransom Bandstand still stands today adjacent to Southport Elementary School across from Illinois state Capitol Building! The original name for this park may have been "Johnstown Farm" but due to various changes made it changed hands multiple times before finally settling upon "Elmwood Park" around 1910 or 1912 according To one source Elmlwodgptn renamed their town after themselves because they could not find anything elsepring like elm wood or walnut trees so they named their town after themselves

In 1916, Chicago annexed parts of Oak Lawn Township, which included what is now Elmwood Park; this annexation made it easier for people within Chicago's borders to find affordable housing. As a result, Elmwood Park grew even faster than other areas within Chicago – thanks in part to its location within easy reachof public transportation!
