The town's first school was built in 1824 by Reverend John Brouwer and funded by his brother-in-law Cornelius Kieft. The first teacher was Mrsannen who taught students up until 1830 when she became Principal of Belmont School District #2 which included parts of Elmwood Park and Humboldt Park then known as Dearborn Heights). A second school operated from 1828 to 1830 with about 20 students attending each session; this building still stands today on South Side Drive across from First Holy Name Parish Church (now called St Anthony Catholic High School)]. In 1830, voters approved a $5 per capita tax for public education that helped fund both schools through local property tax sales proceeds until state appropriations could be made in 1896. In 1840 Gouverneur Morris donated two acres (0 .8 km²) of land at North Side Drive and State Road 54 between Midway Rd./I-294 (now Schaefer Rd.) and Cicero Ave., now used as an open-air park named after him just east of Lemont Avenue within blocks of his childhood home]]. This donation allowed for construction of what is now Northwestern Illinois University’s Memorial Stadium on 8th Street just outside downtown ElmwoodPark]]. In 1841, the family of John Hickey bought a tract of land north of Elmwood and built a home there called "The Grange". In 1851, the population of Elmwood Park numbered only five people. However, by 1860, its population had grown to over fifty people. In 1861, the town voted to incorporate and became known as "Elmwood Park". One of the most important events in Elmwood Park's history occurred when it became the site of what is now known as The Armory Show exhibition which took place from May 1-November 5, 1915 at The Hague American Exhibition Building. More than one million Americans visited this exhibition which showcased new art styles and concepts. After World War I ended, many residents left for various reasons including jobs in Chicago or other cities during the Great Depression. However, some residents decided to stay in Elmwood Park and continue their businesses; such as a grocery store opened by Mr. Walter Pfeffer in 1935 which remains open today as Pfeffer's bakery fame continues today (although with a different name).

Elmwood Park was once a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is now part of the city of Chicago. Elmwood Park was first settled in the 1830s and it became a village in 1847. Elmwood Park was annexed by Chicago in 1896. The population of Elmwood Park increased from 1,000 to 10,000 during the 20th century and it has since decreased to 7,500 residents today.
