Elmwood Park is a town in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elmwood Park was organized as a townsite on November 12, 1847 by combining parts of two other towns: Elmwood and Potterville. On December 1, 1848, Elmwood Park became the first village in Macoupin County. The name "Elmwood" derives from a large sycamore tree that stood near the original town site. The first post office in Elmwood Park was established on July 29, 1850; it was renamed Potterville on October 15 of that year due to growing competition for mail services between the two villages. In 1854, Potterville merged with Elmwood Park to form one municipality under the name "Elmwood Park". On April 15, 1875, ElkwoodPark changed its name again to "Elmwood Village", becoming one of only three villages in Macoupin County that did not change their names during its initial incorporation period (the others being Commerce and West El Paso). On May 3rd 1907 when Elkwoods merged into Springfield Township they also adopted an amended charter which made them unicameral with five members instead of four as originally proposed; this allowed for more efficient government and improved accountability within the township through better communication and included representation for all wards rather than just those within each municipal unit. After years of growth and stability throughout the early 21st century Elmwoods slowly began to unravel due largely to demographic shifts - most noticeably suburbanization in Springfield Township – leading to declining tax receipts and even budget deficits over time until finally declaring bankruptcy in 2011 after many years struggling with debt load & lack of economic viability

On July 1, 1907, Elmwood Park became a town under the name "Elmwood". On October 30, 1927, Elmwood Park became an incorporated town with a land base extending into Meigs and Addison counties. The incorporation created new economic opportunities for residents while also preserving certain aspects of theVillage's culture which had helped it maintain its identity over time. The incorporation also allowed for more expansion within Village boundaries to include larger tracts of undeveloped land located in Addison County west of Danville Road and east of Interstate 95 south of I-55. The Townspeople passed ordinances forbidding racial segregation in public places throughout theirTownship until after World War II when this policy changed due to wartime shortages in labor force housing and other resources that could have been used to integrate Communities along race lines into society without violating laws against discrimination
On Elmwood Park, in 1868, the first public school was built. In 1926, Elmwood Park became a village. In 1961, Elmwood Park was incorporated as a city.
