In 1927 the city of Chicago annexed Elmwood Park; this brought about some changes to the town's government which we will now explore in more detail. In 1933 Mayor Edward J. Byrne announced that he would begin to demolish all of the old buildings in order to make way for new development within the town limits; this plan caused much outcry from residents who objected to their homes being taken down without warning or compensation. Ultimately, Mayor Byrne's decision did not come to fruition and most of what he said came into effect only after his death in 1934; however, some of these plans did actually take place such as building a new high school within town limits which opened in 1935 named after him - Edward J., Byrne High School (). The inauguration of Mayor Richard Manges took place on January 3rd 1955 with Vice-Mayor William O'Brien serving as acting mayor until Manges could be inaugurated due to illness masses around that time (he died on October 25th). Sixth Ward Alderman Harry Daley served as mayor from 1957 until his retirement in 1965 then wrote his own will leaving office effective July 1st 1966 just days before incumbent Alderman Ed Burke took office following Daley's resignation citing health reasons (Burke later won re-election). When Burke took office he appointed First Assistant Deputy Superintendent John Pappas as acting mayor while he awaited results from an investigation into allegations made against Pappas by several citizens which eventually led to his firing but never charged with any crime (). Alderman Harry Daley resigned effective July 1st 1966 just days before incumbent Alderman Ed Burke took office following Daley's resignation citing health reasons ().
