It had a population of 709 people as of the 2010 census. The name "Elmwood" was given to the community by George H. Macy, who donated land for it in 1903. Elmwood Park was incorporated as a village on November 1, 1907. The original trustees were John Dillard (president), J.W. Willson (vice president), Cushman Smith (treasurer), and Adolphus Fenton (counselor). On July 1, 1916, Elmwood Park became one of three villages to be merged into the newly created McHenry County seat of West Chicago. In 1970, Elmwood Park seceded from McHenry County and became its own municipality again with its present name As of the 2010 census, there were 709 residents in Elmwood Park – 308 men and 353 women – making it one of Kane County's most ethnically diverse communities. Seventy percentof the residents are white; 20% are black; 5% are Asian; 2% are Native American; and 0% are Hispanic or Latino origin. The median income for a household in the community was $75,000; the median income for a family was $101,000。

The first people to live in what is now Elmwood Park were white Americans who arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1800s. They cleared land and built homes until 1836 when they sold their holdings to a group of Irish immigrants who named themselves "The Elmwoods." It wasn't until 1846 that the name was changed to Elmwood Park after General James H. van Buren became president of the United States and ordered all military installations be renamed after Governors of New York and Pennsylvania. The first post office in Elmwood Park was established on October 9, 1847. The community grew rapidly during the 1850s with many new residents moving here from surrounding villages due to improved transportation options available through railroads such as the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) and Great Western Railway (GWR). In 1861, two years after Van Buren's death, Congress passed an act giving control of all U.S. post offices within three miles (6 kilometers) of any city or county seat to a board nominated by the governor. This act gave rise to local self-government which began developing into what is now Elmwood Park Township on November 3, 1865 when Edward Cady purchased 5 acres (20,000 m2) east of present day South Shore Drive for $1 per acre ($24 per hectare). In 1872 a grocery store opened in downtown Elmwood Park which later became known as The Gristmill provides groceries for residents as well as catering services for weddings and other events throughout Cook County while also providing work space for students at nearby La Salle University during lunchtime hours between classes. In 1916 Anheuser-Busch bought out Gistmill's owner Harry Wirthman making it one of America's largest brewing companies with breweries located throughout Illinois including Brewsterville (now Grayslake), Crystal City (now Downers Grove), Batavia (now Aurora), Nacogdoches (now Shreveport), lockstep beer drinking contests were held weekly at various locations across Cook County until Prohibition ended in 1933; these lockstep beer drinking contests remain popular today among college students nationwide called "Beer Wars" As industries shifted away from agriculture towards manufacturing during World War II many jobs moved to Lake Forest IL where industrial production took place such as aircraft production resulting in Elmsworth Lakeshore becoming one of North American's leading shorelines serving Lake Michigan with its own beachfront park featuring both water sports activities such as sailing and swimming while also hosting cultural events like jazz concerts and Shakespeare productions along with food services contributed by several Samuel Adams Brewing Companies located throughout Chicagoland including Deerfield Beach IL Sugar Land TX Clearwater FL Milwaukee WI while suburban areas like Oak Lawn IL Morton Heights KS Topeka KS Wichita KS developed into bedroom communities characteristically characterized by large lawns bordered by high school campuses complete with attached housing developments
