Multi tool history in Elmwood Park, Illinois began with the opening of the first store in Elmwood Park in 1892. The store was a two-story building on the corner of Elm and Michigan streets. It was operated by John A. French and his son, John F. French Jr., who also owned a neighboring grocery store. The French's were the first people to sell tools and hardware at the Elmwood Park location. The Store moved to its current location on North State Street in 1912. That same year, Elmer Muhlenberg opened an auto parts store next door to the France Bros.' store. Muhlenberg continued to open additional stores until he died in 1951. In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ritchie opened a grocery store on West State Street near the old Muhlenberg grocerystore; that business operated until it closed in 1978. In 1955, Henni Clausen bought out Mr. Ritchie's interest in the grocery store operation and changed its name to Clausen's Hardware Incorporated (CHI). CHI became one of Elmwood Park's leading retail businesses; it continued to operate until it retired from business operations in 1984."

Elmwood Park is a small, but busy town in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It has a downtown area with several stores and restaurants. Elmwood Park is also home to the headquarters of Aurora Health Care System. The first settlement in what is now Elmwood Park was called "Pine Grove". A post office was established there on March 12, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 14, 1907. The first settler in what is now Elmwood Park was James McNaughton. He arrived there in 1839 and built a cabin he named "Baldwin's Cabin" on the east side of Main Street near the present site of First National Bank building. (In later years this location would become known as McNaughton Square.) In 1840 McNaughton married Anna White and they moved to their new cabin where they lived for the rest of their lives. They had six children: Charles (1841-1924), John (1843-1920), Edwin (1845-1936), Emma (1847-1926),Frances (1849-1925) and Anna Lavinia McNaught McNaught(born October 6th 1850). Alone among these pioneers were two women who would have an impact on Elmwood Park: Fannie Beeson and Clara Barton. Fannie Beeson came from a poor family in rural Pennsylvania; her parents died when she was young so she had to fend for herself as a child; she became educated at home before moving to Chicago with her sister where she started working asa maidservant at age 16., After one year she left to start her own business selling eggs door to door while also attending night classes at Cook College; after four years she opened her own store which sold both groceries and eggs.; Mrs Barton began teaching school while working part time; within five years she had founded Chicago's first high school which still exists today as University High School

Emmwood Park comprises a largely rural area lying on the eastern edge of Cook County and extending into Kane County to its north and east. The village of Elmwood Park lies adjacent to I-294 just south of Evanston; it borders Addison Township to the east and south, Oak Forest Township to the west and north, and Streamline Village to the northwest. The village has three small shopping malls: one near Addison Road and I-294; one on Higgins Road between Rush Street and Springfield Avenue; and one on Eisenhower Boulevard between Rush Street and Roosevelt Road. There are also several agricultural areas including a few dozen tracts of cornfields as well as woodlands for hunting, fishing, hiking, biking/walking etc., all within close proximity to each other in what is considered by many residents as an "open" community with easy access to services both big box stores (elevators) as well as smaller businesses such as farmers markets or convenience stores. Accordingly, Elmwood Park is much more than simply an "ordinary" suburban town—it has features unique among American villages such as active transportation options (streetcars run through downtown), wide open spaces for recreation ( extensive gardens include a large botanical garden ), good schools (the only high school in Kane County), low crime rates (<1 murder per 100,000 residents), excellent job prospects for those seeking employment outside their homes (most people here work in either central or outer suburbs),and extensive cultural resources including two professional theaters AND numerous art galleries which often exhibit new work from locals & visitors alike!
The Elmwood Park area was originally part of the Town of Elmwood. On November 8, 1837, the village of Elmwood incorporated and became a separate entity from the town. The first mayor was Hiram H. De Forest. In 1854, the Village of Elmwood purchased land in what is now Elmwood Park from John Prentice and his heirs for $2,500. This purchase created an open space in downtown Elmwood that is still used today as a park. In 1865, this park was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer to honor him for his gallantry during the Indian Wars. On May 5, 1902, Mayor Samuel Wacker dedicated two blocks of land in front of City Hall to provide a public square in which people could gather for recreation and business purposes. The first services were held on this square on October 1st. Today it serves as a meeting place for city council meetings and other events requiring public square settings
