As of the census of 2000, there were 1,869 people living in 553 households in the village: The population density was 2 people per square mile (0.92/km²). There were 602 housing units at an average density of 0.97/sq mi (0.50/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 93% White and 7% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%.
In 1871, Elmwood Park was organized as a township in Cook County, Illinois. The town was named after the Elmwood family of farmers who had settled there in the 1840s. In 1884, the township was enlarged to include the current boundaries of Elmwood Park. The first school in Elmwood Park was built on the present site of South High School in 1868. A second school, which served as a junior high school from 1870 to 1944, also stood on the site. In 1886, a small park was donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Ransom to be dedicated to their friends and neighbors who had made such an impact on local society during its early years- including Reverend Isaac Slipher and his wife Lucy; Judge Augustus Fenton; Mr. Jno.[1] The park remained unnamed until 1912 when it was renamed Elmwood Park Boulevard in memory of Mrs. John Ransom's husband (and namesake of Chicago's North Side). A private club called "The Gents" Chuckwagon Rally Grounds were established at Elmwood Park between 1916 and 1924 for use by members of the armed forces during World War I and II respectively- an event which continues to this day as an annual tradition held at nearby Soldier Field! In 1957, Elmwood Park township became one of thirty-eight municipalities consolidated into Chicago through Measure H (the "New City Plan"). This incorporation removed some impediments to economic growth that had been caused by zoning regulations specific to certain neighborhoods within city limits- leading to increased development opportunities for those outside of traditional ward boundaries!
