Elmwood Park is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois, USA. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Elmwood Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Skokie to the east, Westchester to the south, and Cook County to the west. The first settlers in what is now Elmwood Park were German immigrants who arrived in 1847. The community was named after two forested areas near Elmwood Springs – Elm Woods and Apple Tree Forest. The name was changed from "Elmwold" to "Elmwood" when a post office opened in 1892. In 1907, an addition to the village was built on land that had been donated by John Seltzer for public use. This addition included a school, churches, a garage and a farmhouse used as transient headquarters for local merchants during Prohibition). In 1927-28 (during one of the most controversial periods in village history), $5,000 was raised by subscription for acquisition of land north of State Street between 71st and 73rd Streets which would form the nucleus of what would become known as Elmont Village (now East Harlem). In 1959-60 (the same year that Elmwood Park became an incorporated town), residents voted to install electric streetlights throughout their village with proceeds going towards lighting up streetside businesses within walking distance of homes. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as Main Street – renamed Elmhurst Drive after Main Street in neighboring Skokie – which runs through much of today's downtown section of Elmwood Park and provides access to both Interstate 95 and Lake Shore Drive/Lake Michigan Boulevard viewed from many homes across town. The current shopping district developed around First Avenue/State Streets just north of I-95 along with new apartment buildings constructed since 2000; this has resulted in less retail space available within walking distance for many families living within or adjacent to town center - making it difficult for shoppers who may have needed such close access before now find comparable selection today outside what can be found inside some newly built properties situated closer to Interstate 95 or Highway 90A (the bypass road leading into town from I-95).

Elmwood Park is a small town in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1879 by George and Susannah Elmwood as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The Elmwoods donated land to make up the town square which still stands today. In 1883, Elmwood Park became a municipality and began to grow with its own schools, businesses and residents. By 1913, Elmwood Park had a population of 521 people and its own post office. By 1925, when it merged with neighboring Addison to form Elmwood-Addison Township (later Addison Heights), it had an estimated population of 1,500 people. In 1960, following racial segregation in Cook County laws that protected African Americans from being integrated into white neighborhoods without first getting approval from their white neighbors, Elmwood Park formed its own school district which remains one of the largest in Cook County to this day. This event also helped spur economic growth for the town over time as businesses started opening up within walking distance of both public schools and African American-owned businesses not available elsewhere in the township or outside of Chicago proper during those early years of black integration in Illinois.[2] In recent years there has been some discussion around whether or not to maintain or update (or even replace) portions of downtown's elegant Beaux Arts architecture dating back to 1903; however much effort has already been put into restoring older sections such as Main Street between State Street and Randolph Road[3]. Despite some challenges faced by this community along these lines - most notably lacklustre job prospects for many residents since waves of automation have taken away many traditional jobs - overall growth has been positive throughout most aspects affecting life hereabouts over time,[4][5][6] giving rise to plans for further development downgradient should things take another turn.[7]
Elmwood Park, Illinois was founded in 1836. The land for the park was donated by John Elmwood and his wife, Sarah Jane. The first public meeting to discuss the formation of Elmwood Park occurred on October 7, 1836. George Washington Henry, a Justice of the Peace from Bloomington, IL presented the motion to form a park. A vote was taken and it was approved with a majority of votes. The mission statement for Elmwood Park reads "to provide an extensive and beautiful open space for public recreation." In 1941, Elmwood Park had an expansion project which included adding a swimming pool and tennis courts.
