Elmwood Park was named for Elmhurst Academy and Haddon Heights School in Elmhurst, Illinois. The first settler in Elmwood Park was David Trimble who arrived on July 7, 1847 with his family from England. Trimble would be the founder of the Trimble Tool Company and one of the early settlers in Elmwood Park. He and his wife Deborah had two children: John and Sarah (née Orr). Elmwood Park was laid out as a township on November 6, 1857 by Wagoner Township trustees John Haggerty and Reuben Burritt. George Stephenson donated land to make up Elkwood Township including what is now Elmwood Park. The first post office opened in this town on December 4th, 1858 under the name "Newburgh". The original white frame building still stands today near its intersection with Bruce Road/Lake Michigan Avenue - it served as a grocery store until 1953 when it became known as the Centennial Hall which still serves as an event space for community events today When Cook County was created in 1865 all of Kane County except for Elk Woods Township went into Cook County along with portions of McHenry County . In 1868, Cook county decided to split Elkhorn Grove Church between Cook county and McHenry county making Elkwoods Township within Cook county again but with a separate post office called "Elkwoods". This practice continued until 1901 when all township offices were moved to downtown Chicago so that services could be better coordinated . In 1898 fire destroyed most of what is now Elmwood Park leaving only some homes standing . After heavy rebuilding efforts including $20,000 from local farmer Elisha Mott there are now over 100 structures remaining from that fire including many turn-of-the-century cottages which still stand today

Elmwood Park is a small town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The first settler in Elmwood Park was Michael Smith who arrived in 1841. In 1846, David Haines built what is now the Smith House on the east side of town. The house still stands and can be visited today. In 1857, Isaac Harmon bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land adjacent to Elmwood Park from John Prentice for $1,500. He named his farm "Harmon's Grove". The first school in Elmwood Park was built on Harmon's Grove in 1860 by teacher Mrs. Amelia Burchfield. In 1871, James Cady donated 1 acre (0.40 hectares) of land to the village for a public school and playground. This property remains in use today as Elmwood Park Middle School campus). The first post office opened in Elmwood Park on May 12th, 1865 by Grosse Pointe Road Amish resident Samuel Jorgensen with mail delivered to his house every morning until 1893 when it moved to its present location next door to the Masonic Lodge on Dearborn Avenue (now Harper Woods Drive). A sawmill and gristmill were erected soon after and continued operation until 1903 when they burned down due to an over-capacity engine; however, their lumber still remains available for purchase here today! There are several interesting buildings remaining from this time including: the Prentice Home which still stands today as a private home; McCurdy’s store which stood across from current day Ford’s Place; and also Wirtz’s farmstead which can be found just north of Dearborn Avenue off Harper Woods Drive near where Community College now stands! A new school building was constructed during this time called Clairton School but it closed around 1925 due to lack of students enrollment despite being brand new!Today only a few pieces remain such as: original doors and windows from Clairton School building; old belltower that once served as both a girls' bathroom and gymnasium; foundation stones for newly constructed Clairton High School which opened in 1951;and lastly one wall remaining from old Clairton Elementary School! These remnants provide us with tantalizing glimpses into everyday life back then while also providing some insight into how much has changed since then!
