In 1892, a man by the name of John Cavanaugh made the first water-powered firearm in Elmwood Park when he created an 8-shot revolver using an engine fueled by water. The gun was nicknamed the "Cavanaugh Rifle" because John Cavanaugh designed it. In 1903, two men by the names of George Britten and Harry Weyand developed a machine that could fire live rounds at short range with no reloading required. This weapon was named the Weyand Pistol. It was used until 1931 when it was replaced by the Colt Model 1911 pistol. The first use of firearms in Elmwood Park occurred on October 25th of 1896 when three men by the name of Dickey, Cook, and Smith fired shots into a tree in front of Ada House for their own amusement. After this event, guns were not allowed insidehouses except for hunting purposes or during legislative sessions. In 1902, James Fenton opened a store at 6031 N State Street called Fenton's Guns & Ammo which became one of Elmwood Park's largest employers after Prohibition ended in 1933. From this store onwards, gun sales would be restricted to residents who had been approved to purchase firearms from government agents through special registration process known as " universal background check ." In 1945 Peter Stokes established his business at 12343 S Gladstone Avenue which would become one of Elmwood Park's most popular shopping destinations for shoppers looking to purchase all types of ammunition and artillery supplies such as cannons and rifles . From 1951 to 1978 Stokes operated his business out of premises located at 11625 W 62nd Street under license from then Mayor Edward J. Byrne . In 1978 Raymond Haines purchased Stokes' business from Peter Stokes making him owner/operator thereof until its closure in 2003 . Gun sales resumed on October 1st 2003 after Haines renovated/refinished existing building into retail space only incidentally housing his personal firearms collection unrelated to any type commercial activity whatsoever!

The first land in Elmwood Park was bought by Abraham Lincoln from John Sutter on October 24, 1837. The present-day village was founded on December 12, 1907 when a group of farmers donated 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land to the village for use as a public square and schoolhouse. Elmwood Park's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when many families from nearby Plainfield moved to Elmwood Park to purchase tracts of land that would eventually form what is now Elmwood Park Village. In 1837, Abraham Lincoln and his family purchased 3/4 acre (190 m2) of land next to what is now Main Street in Elmwood Park for $50 USD. This donationmarked the beginning of Elmwood Park's centuries-long association with county government and political leaders. In 1907, after years of deliberations and discussion between various factions within the village populace and representatives from neighboring townships, it was decided that a new community should be formed specifically for residents of PlainFIELD who had abandoned their homes during World War I due to military service or economic hardship in those areas. The name given to this new community was "Elmwood Park". Today, Elmwood Park continues its close tie with local government through elected officials including Mayor Joe Vitale as well as members of the Village Council and Board Of Trustees responsible for running day-to-day affairs within the village limits. This began an era of rapid transportation development within Chicago that continues to this day. In 1932, Elmwood Park annexed neighbouring Stony Brook Township which made it one of the largest cities in Cook County by population at that time. In 1967, Mayor Richard Mapp announced his intention to close down all but two of City Hall's 16 locations because they were no longer necessary for public services such as police and firefighting operations. This decision set off months-long protests by residents who argued that their neighbourhoods had been neglected while City Hall was closed down for repairs on several fronts including its aging infrastructure and increasing crime rates plaguing downtownChicago areas such as Wrigley Field and Michigan Avenue). Ultimately, Mayor Mapp reversed himself after much pressure from community leaders and parents concerned about potential lose-of-jobs opportunities associated with closures inside city limits (such as those at City Hall).
