Elmwood Park is a small town in CookCounty, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of 9,919 as of 2018. The name Elmwood Park was given to the community by J.D. Rockefeller in honor of his father's estate in Elmwood Ln., which had been renamed Elmhurst after the death of Mr. Rockefeller's father. The first settler in what is now Elmwood Park was John Richards who arrived on horseback in 1837. He built the first house on what is now North Main Street and named it "John Richards House" after himself and his family. In 1840, another settler, James Fenton bought land at present-day Bridgeport Avenue and renamed it "Elmwood". In 1865, Abraham Lincoln died and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C.. A public garden called Lincoln Center was established around this time adjacent to current day South Dearborn Boulevard/Northeast Side Drive (now West Side Drive), just north ofpresent-day Elmwood Park High School auditorium complex on that site (now demolished). Bennett College opened its doors for instruction on October 6th, 1865 as part of Northwestern University system with classes offered from Fall 1865 through Spring 1867 at what is now Northeastern Illinois University's McCormick Place Campus near Wacker Drive/Northeast Side Drive on Lake Michigan shoreline; today known as DePaul University's McCormick Place Campus within Chicago Community Colleges District 5 located east side along Lake Shore Drive from State Street to Randolph Road; also known as Northwestern Polytechnic Institute or Northwestern Univeristy until 1870 when it became DePaul University following the addition of a Collegiate wing having school buildings east side along Michigan Avenue between Randolph Road and State Street across from Chicagoland US Steel Plant site platted by entrepreneur Daniel Burnham who purchased 4 acres west side along lake Erie shorelineLot No.: 93-055 [now bounded by Pulaski Road to the south, Northwest Expressway to the north and Putnam County line to the west]northwest corner Lot: 93-057 [now bounded by Pulaski Rd.]southwest corner lot: 94-003 [now bounded by Wacker Dr./Northeastern Illinois Univ./DePaul Univ.] northeast corner lot: 94-005 [now bounded by Putnam Ct./Lake Erie shoreline] southeast corner lot: 95-001 [Now bounded by Harrison Rd./Lake Erie shoreline] northeast corner lots were combined into one lot number 96-001 in 1872 when all Lots Nos were redefined according to plat map dated November 1st 1865 boundaries included NORTHEAST SIDE DRIVE & HALF WAY BETWEEN HARRISON ROAD & WACKER DRIVE

Elmwood Park was chartered in 1835 as the townsite of Elmhurst, a village on the west bank of the Chicago River. The town was named for Elmwood Grove, a grove of trees near where it now stands. In 1868, Elmwood Park became an incorporated municipality and was renamed Elmwood City. The first recorded settler in Elmwood Park was John Neely who arrived in 1836. Neely's family had come from Ireland and he began to farm in what is now Elmwood Park after moving there from Russia with his wife Catherine. The first school in the area was built by Rev. John Fenton at the corner of State and Western avenues in 1839. In 1865, Elijah Guyon purchased land east of State Street between Western and Cook Avenues for development into what is now Downtown Elmwood Park. At this time, Downtown also included Terrace Hills to the north, North Side streets running parallel to State Street to the south and Racine Avenue running east-west between Cook Avenue and Western Avenue. Guyon's development came to an end when he died suddenly while working on his property near Northwestern Avenue in 1868. However, his dream of creating a downtown still lives on today with many businesses located within walking distance including restaurants like Pizzeria Uno (later Papa John's) and Diner Deluxe (now McDonalds). Emanuel Cermak purchased Guyon's site northeast of Western avenue for development into what is now West Side Central park which opened its doors on November 8th 1870. With over 1,500 acres (560 hectares), West Side Central park eventually became one of Chicagos largest public parks before being sold to the city in 1933 for $225,000 dollars . In 1907, following World War I efforts by Mayor George Biddle Sr., Mayor James Monell appropriated money fromovie proceeds sent back home by American soldiers stationed overseas to be used towards redevelopment projects throughout Chicagoland including new housing developments such as Guaranteed Rate Housing Corporation (GHD) - which would become known as North Clark Street - at 7031 North Clark Boulevard; First National Bank Building at 6773 North Clark Boulevard; Illinois Mutual Life Insurance Company building at 6555 North Clark Boulevard; Masonic Temple No 527 E Lake Shore Drive - which would later become Sears Tower - Southwesterly side facing Michigan Ave.; Federal Savings & Loan Association building at 6000 W Adams Expressway - which would later become Wells Fargo Center; Stover Trust Company building at 5434 W Adams Expressway . In 1933 another appropriation were made for $225 thousand dollars for demolition work along Dearborn Road extending from Cicero Road northeasterly to Milwaukee Road eastnortheastward from Cicero Road . This project would finally lead to construction of Union Station across Dearborn Rd from where it currently stands! The original Dearborn Rd incarnation of Union Station can be seen today as part of MillenniumLink station complex across Dearborn Rd from where it once stood
Elmwood Park is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois. It was located on the border of Aurora and St. Charles counties, and was a junction of the Central Railway (now the Chicago-St. Louis Railway) and the Illinois Central Railroad.
