The Elmwood Park Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1887. The first meetings were held at the home of Senator John F. Kennedy, Sr., on North Clark Street in Elmwood Park. The club began meeting monthly and soon had a pistol range and rifles. In 1890, the club rented a small room in a building on State Street near the river for its first meeting. In 1893, the Elmwood Park Rifle and Pistol Club purchased 100 acres of land at 5th and Western Streets in Elmwood Park to establish an rifle range and pistols clubhouse there. The new clubhouse was built between 1895-1901 by Wm. Ransom & Sons of Chicago as one of their largest projects ever completed. In 1911, the Elmwood Park Rifle and Pistol Club changed its name to the Illinois Gun Association (IGA). In 1912, IGA moved into its current building which is now located at 5100 N DeKalb Avenue in Elmwood Park. In 1922, IGA merged with the Illinois Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) to form what is now called NRA/ISSF International Trade Association (NRA/ITSA). After merging with ISSF, NRA/ITSA became part of what is now known as American Shooters Society (ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN SHOOTERS SOCIETY).
Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmwood Park was laid out in 1871 by J.M. Vickery and his brother-in-law John Ransom as a rural agricultural community named after Elmhurst (now part of Forest Hills), a village in New York state that had recently been founded by James K. Polk to serve as a research center for new American plants and animals. A post office was established at Elmhurst on November 5, 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907. The first settler in Elmwood Park was Isaac French who arrived on July 14, 1872 with his family from farming near Mayville, New York. French built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of North Highway and West 159th Street. He died in 1875 while trying to cross the Illinois River using an improvised ferry made from logs hewn from nearby trees; his wife also drowned crossing the river without protection rafting across when they were met by upstream boats seeking to take them back over land to their farm east of town). IdaFrench married George Cramer (1869–1947) on December 6, 1878; they had two children:Irma (b 1914) and George Washington Cramer (1920–1998). Dutch Reformed preacher Jacobus Johannes van der Laan settled in Elmwood Park around 1880 along with his families from Amsterdam Americaaanslandt (New Netherland). They left behind three sons: Hendrikus Cornelis de laan (1881–1966), Jan Baptiste Fernandes de laan (1884–1945), and Abraham Constantijn de laan (1887–1959). Jacobus Johannes van der Laan's son Jan Baptiste Fernandes de laan organized early Dutch Reformed services at Elmwood Park Church which continued until 1924 when Revddrs Cornelis Houtman(Liege)and De Jong took over responsibility for worship services there; both men later served as rectorates at Stations Catholic Parish south of town where they continue present day religious services today.(see photo below).Jan Baptiste FernandesDeLaan also donated land adjacent to Elmwood Park Cemetery for burial purposes.(photo below right ). Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmwood Park was settled in 1857 and named for Elmhurst, a wood on the west side of Chicago. Elmswood Park is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and borders Addison Township to the north; Lemont Borough to the east; and McHenry County to the south. The town proper has a total area of , making it one of smallest towns in Illinois by land size. The first settlers of Elmwood Park were farmers who arrived from Indiana in 1857. They platted what would become Elmwood Park on land they had purchased from Nicholas Hennepin Krieger, Sr., one of the founders of Minneapolis and its later capital city. In 1860, John Aiken donated 600 acres (2 km²) to be used as a town site with an courthouse and jail. In 1871, local voters approved another donation totaling 1,200 acres (500 m²), which became Elmwood Park's main square or "town square." This gift made possible much development around present-day Elmwood Park – including construction of several homes that still stand today – as well as many businesses that continue to operate today such as banks, restaurants, doctor's offices and more. In 1893, consolidation occurred within Cook County when different counties were merged into one: Elks Grove became Cook County; parts of Addison Township then became Lemont Borough; part of McHenry County transferred to DuPage County; and parts now located within Elk Grove Village joined Lake Forest Hospital District #1 becoming University Hill Hospital District #1 on May 14th 1951 In 1960s-70s residents voted to annex portions of neighboring Addison Township for economic reasons only to have this annexation rejected by referendum because it would have put too much strain on existing services near their homes (see neighbor dispute). In 2001-02 residents re-approved annexing adjacent Lemont Borough after finding that its services did not meet needs identified by community leaders while annexed into Elk Grove Village Elmwood Park has been home to several schools over its history: Stonington Elementary School opened in 1915 while three other schools served students before closing down due TO lack enrollment or acquisitions elsewhere Holy Angels Roman Catholic School serving grades PreK-8 opened in 1916 followed by Our Lady Of Loretto Academy serving grades PK-12 opening 1970s also closed but reopened under new name Oakbrook school serve prekindergarten through 8th grade since 2013
