Elmwood Park is a small town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 592 at the 2000 census. It lies on the south side of the city of Chicago and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Bartlett metropolitan area. The name "Elmwood" was given to the town by John Elmwood, who bought it from David Hackett in 1834. Elmwood Park was originally called Old Town but changed its name to Elmwood in 1857 because of confusion with other towns in that area with similar names. The town has a rich history dating back to when it was first settled by farmers and hunters in what is now Elk Grove Village. On November 3, 1851, three brothers - Isaac Hirschfeld, Solomon Hirschfeld, and Jacob Weisman - founded what is now Elmwood Park as a hunting ground for their father's herd of steers. They named their new community after one of their father's favorite trees: elm (a kind of oak). The first post office opened in this community on October 5, 1854. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made an appearance at a dinner at Elmhurst Park where he delivered his famous State Of The Union Address. In 1922-1923 over 100 people gathered at Elmhurst Park for an exhibition honoring Edward Munch entitled "Munch: A Retrospective". At that time there were only two homes; one belonging to Mrs. Jensie Bechtel and one belonging to Mr. James Fenton which served as the home of Elsie May Fenton until her death in 1984 In 1951 local developer Milton Rosenthal purchased all 6 square miles within today's downtown limits of Elmwood Park from Rockefeller family heirs for $5 million dollars making it America's first municipally owned business development project outside New York City or Washington D.C., setting off a period during which many large industrial parks were created throughout suburban Cook County utilizing municipal landholdings . Although this marked an important change for Elmwood since most such developments were operated by private enterprise developers or leased from state agencies (e .g.: McCormick & Co.'s River Rouge Complex), municipalityality had been used increasingly as an instrument for promoting economic development through public-private partnerships since World War II . By 1990 less than 10% (of total park acreage) remained municipallyowned while nearly 60% had been leased out or privatized either through government-operated programs like Forest Preserves or advertising campaigns sponsored by commercial interests like Sears Roebuck Accordingly , much attention has been paid recently by proponents of civic engagement within municipalities towards developing common strategies and objectives around urban2021 growth strategies while also acknowledging that some degree level independence may be necessary if desired outcomes are not attainable together

Elmwood Park is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Elmwood Park was organized on November 12, 1892 from parts of the towns of Sheffield and Rockford. The first president was Ezekiel Lawrence. On December 8, 1892, the name for the new village was changed to Elmwood Park after a grove of elm trees located in what is now Elmwood Avenue. In 1893-1894, Averell Harriman donated land to make up part of what would become Elmwood Park. In 1896-1901, John Minton donated money for a playground and athletic fields in what would become Elmwood Park. On October 14, 1903 when city officials dedicated a public park at intersection of Wacker Drive and South Side Road (now State Street), they named it "Elmwood Park". In 1907-1910 an addition to the park called "the Reservoir" was built withnative limestone quarried near present day Lombard Road and Harlem Avenue. This reservoir served as both a recreational ground for residents and local businesses during summertime as well as providing water to households during winter months when water service was not available from Lake Michigan or other sources. In 1916-1920 an addition to the park called "The Woods"was built with native oak trees that were brought over from Long Island by shipwrecked sailors who had landed there on their way back home from visits to New York City and Staten Island respectively.. This addition provided shade under the trees while also serving as a training ground for military officers during World War I . After World War I ended there were no further expansion plans made for "Elmwood Park". However in 1922 when Elston Township merged into Kane County and became part of downtown Chicago proper it decided that "Elmwood Park", along with other villages within its boundaries such as Lincolnwoods Annexee (Lincolnwoods Beach), Westchester Heights (Westchester Beach) & North Shore (North Shore Beach) should be annexed into downtown Chicago proper so that they too could enjoy all sorts of services offered by centralized government offices including firefighting and police services which had been moved uptown since 1920s when central government functions had been divided between Cook County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department under Mayor Edward Keane's administration. On January 1st 1923 this plan came into effect when all villages within city limits became one municipality with its own mayor known formally as "Downtown Chicago Municipal Authority". As part of this merger most if not all public services within Downtown Chicago proper were transferred over to the newly created authority including streetlights being turned off at night until 3am instead thereof; electric parking meters becoming standard placeholders starting July 1924; library opening on May 15th 1925 followed by fire station openings on June 9th 1926 & July 5th 1927; market open September 24th 1927 followed by grocery store opening October 1st 1928; post office opened November 16th 1928; finally factories occupying portions closer east side beginning February 1929 following annexation efforts by former Mayor Richard J Evans who felt he had lost control over downtownChicago Proper due to lack of subsidies received from charter school operators backed by wealthy businessmen like John Drysdale who saw his rivals' investments threatened). With these changes many homes which once sat atop high rise buildings behind busy streets are now among lower density housing developments lining Leland Avenue between Rushmore Road & Clark Street where commercial properties have taken over much acreage formerly used for agriculture orresidential use only
