Elmhurst is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of Elmhurst Road, about northwest of Chicago. The population was 2,975 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Elmhurst was James Weldon who built a cabin on the present site in 1814. He and his wife were the first white women to live in what is now Elmhurst Township. His daughter Sarah married John Hanks in 1829 and their descendants still live there today with four daughters: Betty (1913-2007), Shirley (1915-2008), Ellen (born 1945) and Lori (b. 1946). In 1847, Elijah Meeks bought land east of present day Elmhurst from James Weldon for $1 per acre. He built a gristmill on the current site that year and operated it until 1861 when he sold it to George Wirths for $2 per acre. In 1865, Wirths sold his interest in the mill to Elisha Gish which later became part of Illinois Central Railroad. In 1896, Gish donated land to The Methodist Episcopal Church c/o Rev Jno Denton for use as a township parkland; this donation remains today as part of Elmhurst Park Historic District/. In 1903, Dutchman Cornelius Schaefer opened a small grocery store at 116th Street and York Avenue - Schaefer's Grocery remains open today as First National Grocery & Supermarket inside its original building adjacent to Ivey Middle School across York Avenue from Schaefer's grotto restaurant - known locally as "the Ark". Schaefer also founded Schaefer's Brewery which continues operations today under the name Schaefer Brewing Company.. Ivey Lake Park opened in 1922 following plans by Mayor Harry Seward with money provided by Mrs John Ahern ($3 million raised). The Elmshurst Golf Course was completed in 1924 after years of construction by Arden Hills Golf Club president Herbert Kappelerupe and club members Edwin Garber and Art Kaufman Sr.. In 1927, Kappelerupe donated additional golf course land adjoining Ivey Lake Park for use by both golfers and pleasure seekers alike; this donation remains active today as one half mile long parallel private street named Arden Hills Parkway which runs along Kappelerupe Greens borders Ivey Lake Park west of Kenwood Rd., crosses over into Cook County just south of Eisenhower Ave., intersects Willows Rd./Kappelerupe Dr./Hwy 60 then turns north-west again before terminating at Arden Hills Country Club off Orchard Rd.. A drive down Arden Hills Parkway will take you past many interesting residences including one home designed by architect Louis Sullivan - popularly know as "The White House" due to its association with Ulysses S Grant during his time as President... John Hanks moved from Elk Grove Village IL around 1830 where he started a farmstead called 'Bushnell'. One account has him moving upriver towards Niles IL while another account claims he moved further upstream near Dearborn IL where he started trading goods with other Native American groups related to hunting bears [*] Bushnell is still standing but most likely destroyed during postWWII suburban development** .
