In 1837, John Pritzker sold 1,380 acres (500 hectares) of land alongslope northeast of Chicago to George Peabody for $2 million dollars – one of the largest deeds ever recorded in Cook County history In 1848-49 two more parcels were acquired which included 160 acres (61 hectares) needed for a new village site which would include churches and other public buildings Because these purchases occurred on land where water tables had been shifted by subsidence over many years due to heavy use by people discharging their wastewater onto streets and properties below—the Village Site plan called for direct irrigation with an Egyptian canal system that would be completed much later when surface waters became available

Elmhurst was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Southeast elmhurst to the south, southwest Elmhurst to the west and north, and Skokie Township to the east. The first residents of Elmhurst were Hungarian immigrants who immigrated in 1847. In 1872, a store and post office were built on what is today Elmhurst Avenue. The first school in Elmhurst was opened in 1874. A second school was built in 1888 on State Street and it became known as "Stroud's School". In 1902-03, an new elementary school was built on Douglas Avenue which served as the town's third high school for students from grades 6 through 8 until it closed in 2003-04. In 1924-25, an addition to the original high school building (which had been used as a library) was completed and named after János Horthy, then Prime Minister of Hungary during World War I. It remained operational as "Horthy Park" until it closed in 1984-85 due to budget cuts by then Mayor John Strohmke; however, portions of it remain extant as part of Elmhurst High School’s athletic complex today. The population of Elmhurst decreased rapidly between 1950 and 2000 due to suburban growth within Cook County; however its decline has been reversed since 2000 with rapid growth within Elk Grove Village subdivision nearby (the former site of Moline). As a result of this recent growth within Elk Grove Village subdivision adjacent to Elmhurst village boundaries – with little or no change to the demographics or economics of either community – most residents now consider themselves “village people” rather than “elmhurtsians” or “cook county natives”1 .
Elmhurst was founded in 1836 by farmers from eastern Illinois. The town became a significant center for the production of cotton and other agricultural products, as well as for manufacturing. Elmhurst's brick buildings and period churches remain important landmarks today.
