Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,027 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst was founded in 1857 by Captain John Kapp and his family as a farmstead on the south side of Elmhurst Lake. At its peak, Elmhurst had a population of 1,600 people. The first black person to live in Elmhurst was Alice Oppenheimer who arrived in 1892 from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The town's growth followed a pattern common among many early American towns: rapid construction of schools and churches as well as other civic amenities spurred by increasing prosperity and opportunity. In 1900, Elmhurst became one of the twenty-five townships within Cook County; it remained that way until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Hinsdale to form the city of Chicago. Today, Elmhurst is home to a variety of cultural attractions including three museums (the Art Institute of Chicago Museum of Modern Art; the Field Museum; and the library), two golf courses (the Jack Nicklaus Golf Resort & Course and Calumet Country Club), four shopping malls (one inside the city limits and three outsideChicago), nine professional sports teams (six NHL teams; six NBA teams; one Arena Football League team), twelve high school athletic programs (four NCAA Division I football schools—McCarthy Academy; Northwestern University Wildcatsfootball program; DePaul University Demons basketball team)—and numerous small businesses along Route 56A between downtown Chicago and Waukesha County Park on DuPage County's north side. The community has also experienced significant gentrification over recent years with more than 50% of residents now identifying as Hispanic or Latino - making it one of Illinois' fastest-growing cities for minority populations since 2000.

Elmhurst is a village located in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2000 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Elmhurst were two families who came from Fairfield Township, Connecticut in 1817. They named their settlement after a large and beautiful tree near their home: "Elmhurst". In 1834, George Washington Carver moved to Elmhurst from Quincy, Illinois and opened a farm east of town. He became one of the most important figures in agriculture in Illinois and also donated land to be used for agricultural purposes. In 1875, Rev. James Garnett founded The Methodist Episcopal Church in Elmhurst with $10 dollars he had given away as seed money. Reverend Garnett's work helped connect the village with larger centers such as Chicago and Detroit while also providing social services to members of the community. The Village of Elmhurst was incorporated on January 15th, 1909 by an act of the General Assemblyof Cook County. At that time there were only 9 residents living within its borders: George Washington Carver (founder & first Mayor), Revs Garnett & Addison (Church leaders), Mrs Gardner (owner of local grocery store & post office), Mr Wiegand (electrician), Willis Hogg (blacksmith) & his family(farmhands). In 1916-1918 (*later*) Emerson Hogg played an instrumental role in helping found Glencoe Park which later became famous for its annual Jaycee pageants held there each year during summertime.
The Elmhurst community began as a small village on the banks of the Illinois River in 1848. It was named for General James H. Elmhurst, who hadLocated and organized the first national bank in America. The village grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 185 people. In 1865, Elmhurst became part of the new city of Chicago.
