Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first residents of Elmhurst were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1825. They founded a village on the banks of the Chicago River and named it "Elmhurst". In 1835, they sold their land to John Pritzker, who built what is now his mansion there. He renamed it "Pritzker" after his father's Hungarian-born family name. In 1892, insurance magnate Elihu Root moved to Elmhurst and started a real estate company that became one of America's largest and most successful. His company issued more $1 million bonds than any other issuer in history. From 1893 until he died in 1923, Root was chairman of the American Banking Company which had its headquarters at Elmhurst from 1896 until its merger with Chase National Bank in 1914. The importance and success of this company made him an icon for many people in Elmhurst; one local legend has it that if you try to cross streets where Root once walked without getting lost, you will find several small memorial plaques documenting his life and work at American Banking Company. As commercial activity declined throughout much of Cook County during World War II (a time when printing presses were located away from cities), many businesses closed or relocated within Elmhurst proper as well as elsewhere in South Egg Harbor Township due to wartime rationing restrictions on some materials such as paper pulp and lead paint used by manufacturing plants across town (the restrictions also impacted industries such as shipbuilding outside Boston). In 1945 most business owners decided not to relocate again due to war-time inflationary pressures; however reopening soon afterward proved difficult since so few customers had returned since prices had increased 100%. By 1951 only 8% of businesses still operated out of doors because too much damage had been done by weather over the years (exacerbated by numerous fires). Elmhurst was founded in 1849 by Joshua and Anna Elmhurst. The Elmhurst post office was established in 1850, and the Elmhurst School was opened in 1851. The town of Elmhurst was incorporated on February 1, 1854. In 1870, the first electric light bill passed through the United States Congress, and Elmhurst became the first village in Illinois to receive a power plant from that source. In 1896, the Village Board voted to annex part of neighboring Chicago Heights, which led to an increased population for both villages. In 1897, the Chicago Heights Bridge was completed linking East and West Park Drive within Elmhurst. That same year saw the opening of America's first movie theater in Elmhurst-Shaw Field House on Shaw Boulevard just east of Park Drive. TheVillage Board approved plans for a new high school in 1903 and construction began that same year; itopened its doors to students on November 3, 1904. The building has been used as a bank building ever since-the first one being built there in 1865-and is now known as Villapark Mall. The early 21st century saw continued growth for both villages with annexation of adjacent communities including Northbrook (1999), Glenview (2002), Deerfield (2003), Wheaton (2004), Lombard (2006) and Round Lake Beach (2007).
