Elmhurst, Illinois is a town in La Salle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst was founded in 1836 as a small settlement on the north side of Chicago by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky and Tennessee. As Chicago grew and industrialization took hold, Elmhurst grew too. In 1893 Elmhurst became one of the first towns in Cook County to be made an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six-member board of trustees. The town's nickname "The Town that Grew" comes from its rapid growth during the late 1800s due to its location along the Milwaukee Road and its numerous manufacturing plants that operated in what is now Elmhurst during that time period. The growth continued into the 21st century with new businesses opening up and more people moving into Elmhurst. Today, Elmhurst has a strong community spirit that continues to grow despite recent economic challenges faced by many communities around Chicagoland such as high unemployment rates, limited access to education resources and falling property values. Elmhurst was once home to several large breweries which gave it a unique flavor compared to most other towns in Illinois. Maple Leaf Brewery (now MillerCoors) built their first brewery here in 1876; it remains one of only two facilities remaining operational within Cook County today (the other being Beechwood Brewery). Other notable brewing companies located in or close by include White Castle Brewing Company (founded 1888), Schlitz Brewing Company (founded 1886), Heineken Beer Corporation (formed 1896), Buffalo Bill’s Bar-B-Q BBQ restaurant (opened 1950), Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company (established 1922) and Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company’s corporate headquarters building which opened in 1907 near Wacker Drive South.[1] The current brewery complex occupies parts of three buildings dating back to 1915: the original Sweet Shop Building on North Michigan Street;[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] also known as “The Old Mill”; now used as a senior living center;[10][11][12]; and finally,[13]the new Sweet Shop Building which opened in 2014 adjacent to his old mill facility on West Division Street across from Soldier Field arena.[14][15] In addition to local breweries there were also several national ones located nearby including Anheuser Busch InBev NV headquartered just east of town on Racine Avenue overlooking Lake Michigan while multinational brands like Unilever Plc., Nestle SA., Danone SA., PepsiCo U S A., Coca Cola Bottling Works Incorporated - formerly Koppers Coopers - all had their regional headquarters located within walking distance or much shorter drives away such as Schlotzsky's Brewery & Distillery(later NATO Foods)[16], Procter & Gamble Co.'s Frito Lay division,[17], Chunk Chocolate Factory Incorporated - later Jamba Juice - all had their distribution centers within minutes' drive radius according to Google Maps data while Kraft Heinz AG had their corporate headquarters across I-94 south off I-94 about 20 miles west of downtownChicago.]
Elmhurst was founded in 1854 by Rev. George A. Smith, a Methodist preacher and father of the current Elmhurst School District. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Illinois Central Railroad, which made it an important early center for industry and commerce. In 1870, Elmhurst became a city when it annexed the neighboring towns of Addison and Cicero. The city enjoyed high levels of prosperity until the late 1800s, when industrial growth began to decline in Illinois. Elmhurst lost much of its vital economic activity after the opening of the Chicago White Stock Yards in 1887 and subsequent Great Depression. The population declined gradually until it reached its low point in 1951 at just over 1,000 people. The population increased again during the 1960s and 1970s as suburban development spread out from nearby Urbana into Elmhurst’s borders. However, recent efforts by Mayor Edward Micallef to revive downtown have failed to result in a significant increase in business or jobs for residents. Today, Elmhurst is a small community with few permanent residents and limited access to essential services such as education and health care
