Elmhurst, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most racially diverse towns in Cook County. Elmhurst is also one of the most economically and politically diverse towns in Illinois. The name Elmhurst was first settled by German immigrants in 1836. The community was named for General George Washington Elmendorf, who had been Commandant of the 1st Regiment of Foot (thefore called "Old Guard") during the American Revolution. A post office was established at Elmhurst on October 12, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 13, 1865. In 1840, John Pritzker bought land near what is now Elmhurst from Nicholas Scherrer for $1,000. Pritzker built a home there which he named "Pritzker's Grove". He served as Mayor of Chicago from 1851 to 1854 and again from 1861 to 1865; during his time as Mayor he helped create Chicago's first city park - Halsted Park - and promoted public education throughout the city through legislation such as the School Districts Act of 1860 and Streets and Highways Act of 1862. Elmhurst became an organized village on December 15, 1871 when it amalgamated with two other villages – North Elmdorf (now part of Glenview) and South Elmdorf (now part of Schaumburg). At that time it contained 431 residents: men, women, children under 16 years old living with their parents or guardian(s), plus another 50 or so transient residents who had come to live temporarily in these villages while their permanent homes were being built or improved elsewhere in Cook County or beyond Scott Township boundaries limits. In 1888 Elkhurst voters passed a proposition allowing manufacturers' stores within its borders to sell goods directly to consumers instead of through local retailers; this opened up many new economic opportunities for the townspeople. During World War II much effort went into making sure that all citizens were registered with military service registration cards even if they did not actually serve; this gave civilians some idea about what kind of activities were happening around them should hostilities start up again (and kept troops out of trouble). After war ended there wasn't much need for such services since everyone had returned home but some may have still needed them because certain government responsibilities continued like maintaining taxation records/imposts etc.; nonetheless checks were made periodically especially following natural disasters like fires etcetera so no one could get away without consequence . Elmhurst, Illinois was a small town located in the northern portion of Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1846 by Colonel John D. Elmhurst and his wife, Nancy Broughton Elmhurst. The Elmhirsts were the first white people to live in what is now Elmhurst Township. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to the larger cities of Chicago and Milwaukee and its status as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1867, Elmhurst became part of the newly created city of Chicago. The population gradually declined over the next few decades as manufacturing moved out of Illinois and into cheaper states such as China and Mexico. In 1984, Elmhurst was merged with neighboring Chatham Township to form downtown Chatham Township.
Elmhurst was founded in 1834 by Captain George Dearborn and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for the Elm trees that were in abundance on their farm. The Dearborns had two children, John and Chloe. In 1835, the Dearborns sold their farm to a group of investors led by Colonel Elijah Howe. The new owners decided to rename the town Elmhurst after Howe's hometown of Elmira, New York. In 1855, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad built a line from Wheeling, West Virginia to Elmhurst. This helped bring more people and businesses to the town. In 1865, Elmhurst became a city and was renamed after Chicago Mayor James Hennepin. In 1921, Elmhurst merged with Pingree Grove to form Pingree Grove-Elmhurst Township Community School District No 1 (later Elk Grove Village Schools). That year also saw the first public school in Pingree Grove-Elmhurst Township open its doors to students: Pembroke Avenue Elementary School. Today, Elmhurst is home to over 2,000 residents and offers a variety of opportunities for education including four high schools; three middle schools; six elementary schools; one special needs school; as well as many businesses and services available through its community building program."
