Elmhurst, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,744 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is the smallest of the five cities in Cook County and its municipal boundaries do not stretch to encompass all of northeastern Chicago suburbs such as Skokie and Oak Brook. The history of Elmhurst dates back to 1838 when James K. Polk was elected President of the United States and his family moved from West Virginia to Elmhurst after he became Vice President. The first post office in Elmhurst was established in 1841. In 1868, a railroad depot was built on what is now Washington Street just north of State Street in downtown Elmhurst. The depot served as a stop for trains travelling between Chicago and Joliet until it closed down in 1918. In 1916, Mayor John Ladd announced that he would build an indoor swimming pool called "Lakefront". It wasn't until 1928 that construction began on the facility which eventually became known as "Ladd Pool". The pool originally consisted of two lanes with a deep end at the center and shallow ends near each side where people could swim or play football during summertime; however, by 1932 it had been increased to four lanes with a deep end at one end and three shallow ends near each other. In 1936, Laddpool underwent major renovations which included new landscaping and drainage systems which improved water quality for both users andKOIN 6 News reported that “the biggest improvement has been made over any recent swimming pools I have seen” In 1952-1953 (or 1953), plans were made to demolish part of Ladd Pool so that an amusement park could be built there instead but this never happened because at that time Lakeview Park was being developed adjacent to the original Ladd Pool site). Elmhurst's first lakefront subdivision appeared around 1960 called "Island Breeze" which followed guidelines set by then-Mayor Edward Jens (who also designed & oversaw development of today's Near South Side neighborhood) including creating open spaces within developments while allowing density along arterial streets within those developmentsmaximum height allowed without violating zoning ordinancesThis latter policy helped give rise to many high-end subdivisions such as Beverly Hills/Waldorf Highlands/Lake View Terrace etc.. Today few if any residences are located on lakeshore areas once used for swimming; rather they are concentrated inland closer to arterial streets where parking is more affordable or easily available

Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the southern borders of the city of Chicago and was originally part of Maywood Township. The first settlers in Elmhurst were three families who came to what would become Elmhurst from New York City in 1836. By 1840, there were twelve settler families living in Elmhurst. The name "Elmhurst" originated with a tree that had been cut down by early settlers to make way for their farmsteads. The tree was brought back to life by a group of children who restored it as an evidence tree near the courthouse square. The first school in Elmhurst was built on State Street in 1838; it became known as "Moses Hahn's School". When Maywood Township was created out of parts of Cook County on November 1, 1850, only six houses remained within its boundaries when it joined with Elmhurst Township; all but one (the old Hahn house) were razed and replaced with new homes during the early years of township growth. In 1875, physician Dr. John Hennepin opened his practice at 4191 North Avenue and soon found himself treating patients from all over Cook County including those residing in Maywood and Elmont townships which then ceded land eastward to create what is now downtown Chicago. One account credits him with saving many lives by performing operations without anesthesia until Southern Illinois University Hospital could provide such equipment more cheaply than anywhere else in America at that time; he died there after several years' workbench surgery residency under Drs Samuel Wernick (1837-1920) and Lewis Frye (1841-1922). In 1888 Pioneer Savings Bank moved from its original location at 3rd & Washington Streets into two new buildings on Michigan Avenue northwest of present day Northwestern Memorial Park - this building still stands today as Wells Fargo Plaza - making Elmurst one of the earliest suburbs west of Lake Michigan! In 1911 President William McKinley delivered his final speech from north side Of Grant Park before being assassinated – this address took place just south east corner lot between Randolph street & Kedzie avenue across street from current day Douglas Park Elementary School site later donated to city for public use – McKinley's assassination has been widely cited as one reason for suburban sprawl throughout Chicagoland during not just WWI but also post WWI era when inner city areas declined precipitously
