The Elmhurst community was founded in 1853 by James and Nancy Ketchum. The first white settler, John C. Hitt, arrived in 1854. Hitt's wife, Jane Forrest, had married a local blacksmith named Alexander McNulty in 1841. In 1870, the town of Elmhurst became part of the larger city of Chicago. In the early 1900s, Elmhurst experienced growth as a result of its location near Uptown and the opening of the federal government's new post office on West 106th Street. The population increased rapidly and by 1910 Elmhurst had over 1,000 residents. However, during World War I the community suffered from food shortages due to prohibitionism; as a result, many residents moved out for various reasons (including poverty). "The Great Migration" began in earnest after World War II and saw waves of African Americans move to Elmhurst from other parts of Chicago. The influx caused significant economic hardship for the town; however, some residents took advantage of subsidized housing and managed to remain solvent through careful management of their finances. By 1970 Elmhurst had shrunk to just over 100 residents and was experiencing rapid decline due to gentrification trends in Chicagoland at that time."
