Elmhurst, Illinois is a town in the Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1837, Samuel Winchester opened his gunsmith shop in Elmhurst and began to make knives for sale to settlers in northern Illinois. In 1847, he moved his business to what is now Elmhurst Park and continued to sell knives until 1850 when he closed his shop and started a farm. The first knife factory in Elmhurst was built by John Bemis on the property of George Hildebrandt in 1861-1862. From 1865-1968, Jens Jensen made knives for Sears & Roebuck before moving production to Waukegan in 1969. With over 100 years of continuous knife production at one location, elmhurst has been among the most renowned bladesmiths in America.

Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by Maywood to the west, Humboldt Park to the north, Skokie to the east and South Elgin to the south. Elmhurst was founded in 1854 as a small settlement on a sugar plantation by Jacob Fisk and his family. The town was named after Elmira Castle in England where Fisk's father had been born. In 1860, Elmhurst became an incorporated village and remained so until 1964 when it merged with neighboring Maywood into one municipality. The village government continued to exist until it merged into city government effective July 1, 2019. The first settler in what would become Elmhurst was Abram Deasy who built a cabin on what is now Cottage Road in 1854. A post office called Deasyville was established in 1855, but failed because no one wanted to send mail from their farmhouse near Humboldt Park! In 1861, Elijah Ames opened a store next door which soon became known as "the Dairy" for its excellence in supplying fresh milk to residents of Maywood and other nearby villages from his large cream house on Main Street across from present day Ryan’s restaurant (now known as “The Grapes”). Emerson Payson purchased land adjoining Ames' dairy around 1865 and erected a large brick house that served as both home and business center for many years; later this property became known as "Payson Place". On October 6th of that year Mrs. Payson donated her lot along Second Street between Columbia Parkway & Cicero Avenue for use as a public square or cemetery-a site which remains today within walking distance of most residents'. This Donation marked perhaps the most important event at that early stage of our wonderful town - something new & permanent had come into being! Mr . & Mrs . Payson were kind enough also to contribute $100 towards erecting our first school building - still standing & proudly serving us today! Reverend John Ewing officiated at this very special dedication ceremony...A cornerstone laid subsequently revealed he actually did not know how much work went INTO making those FIRST two rooms habitable inside THAT structure!!! (Frequently Asked Questions about Our Town's Early History) After years of hard work by many individuals (& groups), including Mrs., Board Members VFW Post #1 ( intervening thru donation) helped erect OUR FIRST SCHOOL building just south of First Street on December 26th 1911!! With excitement we filled up that Room with eager students learning under Obedience CLASSES from Rev John Ewing himself...He even entertained us all while teaching during long absences too !! We THANK EVERYONE who has participated thus far w/ ELMHURST'S VERY OWN SCHOOLHOUSE!!! Today there are over 350 children attending our local schools grades PreK-12th grade combined!!!!! A TOTAL OF 3rd Grade STUDENTS ARE ACTUALLY RETURNING TO SCHOOL FOR THE NEW YEAR!!!! WOWzers!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an amazing accomplishment especially when you consider how things have REALLY changed since then...(Physical Location Today: Where Once There Was One School Building On That Side Of The Street Now There Are Five!) For more than 50 years now we've been doing things better than ever before thanks largely - again -to our incredible community effort!!!

Elmhurst was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, until the early 21st century. It is now part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1847 by John A. Elmhurst and his family as a small farming village on the east side of Chicago. The Elmhurst post office operated from 1847 to 1861; it was renamed Elmhurst after John A. Elmhurst's father-in-law, Nathaniel Quincy Eaton. The first school building in what is now Elmhurst was built in 1851; it served as a public school until 1903. The present elementary and high schools were opened in 1924 and 1954, respectively. The community acquired its current name when it became an incorporated city in 1961; the city charter granted city status to Elmhurst on November 3 that year. The population of the city increased rapidly following incorporation, relative to surrounding villages and towns; by 2000, Elmhurst had a population of almost 54,000 people. In 2000–2001, work began on developing the downtown area of Elmhurst into a mixed-use district containing both commercial and residential space; this project is scheduled for completion by 2020. Elmhurst has been known for its temperate climate since at least the late 19th century; however, temperatures have become increasingly extreme over time due to air pollution from nearby factories and other industrial activities. This problem was compounded by changes in zoning laws which allowed development near Interstate 95 while prohibiting development along streets that connected with those highways or within 1 mile (1 km) of any airport or expressway exit

Smith, became a municipally chartered town on February 15, 1865. Elmhurst's population peaked at over 10,000 in 1929 and it had a population of only 6,815 by 1945.
