Elmhurst, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,747 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of DuPage County. The first people to live in what is now Elmhurst were the Potawatomi and other Native American groups who hunted and gathered game near by. They built their wigwams on high ground overlooking the Chicago River. When land was bought for agriculture and development in 1847, most of the Potawatomi left for new settlements in Michigan or Wisconsin; some did stay behind and started a small community called Old North Elmhurst on former potawatomi land east of I-55 near Danville. The first post office in Elmhurst was established on February 14, 1848; it closed on July 15, 1865 due to lack of customers. With only three residents living there at that time (John Ahern, John Matson and George Papp), requests for mail delivery were sent out to all surrounding villages until finally an automated system was placed in operation with two trucks providing service twice daily between Elmhurst and Danville from October 1st 1860 until May 5th 1870; this system continued until discontinued due to budget cuts later that year. In 1851–1853 a school district was organized which included parts of present-day DuPage County including part of what is now Elmhurst Township as well as side streets running east/west through Center Grove Village northward into Parkwood Gardens before turning northwest into Dearborn Avenue just south of Cicero Avenue. One year prior to incorporation as a village on November 12th, 1850 by order of General Anthony Wayne – then head military officer commanding all Northwestern Territory – Dearborn Avenue became Seventh Street within present-day Elmhurst Township after leading from Cicero avenue southeast along Seventh Street past Parkwood Gardens northeast into Dearborn Boulevard where it crossed over I-355 just west of current occupied State Road 10 before rejoining Creek Road eastbound immediately south of Woodbine Drive today’s Cicero Avenue). On January 3rd 1865 when Glendale Heights took its final form as part of annexation by Oak Glen around 400 acres (137 hectares) northward extending east beyond our current limits ½ mile wide forming modern day Arlington Heights & next door we had our first white baby born Thomas Crain aka Tom Sweeny born 2 days premature weighing only eight pounds six ounces [3 kilograms] William Hickey attended his baptism becoming one third generation anglophile Emerson Peterson resident since 1790 also sonny Chalkman who attended subsequent funerals Ester Vetter baptized December 6th 1865 Anna Fenton baptisms December 13th 1865 Alice Caldwell Enthusiasm about starting school led Mrs Hickey girls ) In 1870 when city limits were expanded westward annexing much more land including portions now belonging to Glen Ellyn & Crystal Lake elementary schools such as Fifth street running northeasterly from Ravenswood Drive NE up past equipment dealer store then turning SW onto Second St which became Shriver WayNW reaching its eastern terminus just southof Ballwin Blvd.) At this time ‘New Town Hall’ located on current site opposite Joliet High School) ACH James Middle School opened Septermber 30TH 1870 having previously been used as Day School for Boys operated by Mr Laddourg duringWWII). The town's economy grew steadily throughout the 19th century thanks to its position as a major transportation hub and its location on two main routes linking Chicago with other parts of the country. During World War II, Elmhurst played an important role in the development of Camp David – one of President Franklin D Roosevelt's final acts before leaving office – and also supported military efforts in Europe during World War II both through manufacturing production (such as aircraft frames) and service members stationed there. In 1881, Elmhurst was organized as a village. The first mayor was James F. Dyer. On November 3, 1903, the Village of Elmhurst became a town. Mayor John W. McKinney served as its first treasurer and vice president. March 1, 1907-November 3, 1913 were two years with no mayoral election due to term limits set by the Illinois legislature at that time. On November 3, 1913 James Fenton became the first mayor of Elmhurst when he won in an election held after term limits were abolished.
