The Elmhurst shootings, which took place on November 14, 1912 in Elmhurst, Illinois, left four people dead and thirteen injured. The shooters were two men who had been discharged from the military for mental illness and a woman who was the daughter of one of the victims.
Elmhurst is a community in Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered by the communities of Arlington Heights to the north, Hyde Park to the east, Downers Grove to the south, and West Elgin to the west. The population was 83,511 as of 2000. Elmhurst is known for its large number of Elmhurst Academy Schools students who attend K-8 schools in one or more villages around town. Elmhurst's history goes back to 1838 when a group of farmers led by Jacob Fenton bought land in what is now Elmhurst. The name "Elmhurst" was given to their new home because of its deep red soil which was found at that location. The community rapidly grew due to its good location and natural resources. In 1871, the first post office was established in Elmhurst and it continued operating until it opened in 1908. The area that now makes up Elmhurst was originally inhabited by Native Americans who lived near present-day Crystal Lake and Prospect Heights on Side Road between Forest Glen and Burr Ridge Roads. After American settlement began, English settlers arrived in droves from eastern Pennsylvania and Ohio during the mid-19th century seeking new land for themselves and their families. Many of these early settlers brought with them their livestock, crops, tools, etc., which were auctioned off at public sale Additional land became available through purchases or donations from private individuals following outbreaks of epidemics such as smallpox that struck these areas intermittently throughout the 19th century In 1878–79 a group of men under the leadership of John Sibley petitioned county commissioners for permission to build a school on an approximately tract located between Burr Ridge Road (now Wacker Drive) and Forest Glen Avenue (now Wacker Drive/Crystal Lake Road). The petition resulted in approval but no school actually being built until 1903 when ELMHS #1 Central School Building opened . From this time through World War II there were only two exceptions: First during World War II #2 South School building opened on October 25th 1945 after $5,000 had been raised from citizens throughout town; Second during World War II #3 North School building opened on December 12th 1945 after $10,000 had been raised from citizens throughout town . A total number of 17 Schools operated within ELMHS boundaries before disbanding due largely to lack funding or changing technology . However three additional elementary schools – Community High School (C3), Holy Cross Elementary (HC3), & St Bede’s Catholic Church -opened following consolidation efforts over several years beginning in 1984 when all 7 original elementary school buildings were combined into one facility administered by our newly formed district Office staff including Headmasters/Headmistresses/Vice Principals & Assistant Principals responsible for instructional services across all 7 campuses with 3 Head Start Nursery locations providing care for infants 1st grade through 5th grades while parents are away at work; this gave us 9 sites capable OF accommodating 300+ children PER SCHOOL! This newest addition has since closed & replaced by former Bellefontaine Elementary site currently housing 4 middle schools classrooms 3rd thru 6th grades GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: On September 15 2009 deemed surplus property received from demolition effort associated with closures announced earlier that year along Randolph Rd which included 2 highrise towers formerly used as part as Administration offices housing 4 elementary schools classrooms 3rd thru 6th grades alongwith 2 gymnasiums adjacent thereto; this parcel also includes lot previously belonging TO BELLEFONTAINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS which remain undeveloped status quo pending review [ Note : Prior to 2007 much unused property lay outside village limits extending well beyond Village limits upon which development applications have been submitted ]. } An early account describing how Elmhurst came about can be found printed twice yearly issues Of The Village Council Journal starting March 1st 1840 Issue numbers unknown Please find attached plan entitled "Plan For Purchase Of Land For A New Townsite" drawn up by Ebenezer Davenport showing proposed site for future village located near current day Crystal Lake situated upon rich red earth having excellent drainage properties
Gun triggers are the devices that allow firearms to be fired by pressing a button on the trigger. The first triggers were built in 18th century and were called "pepper-box triggers". Pepper-box triggers consisted of two parts: an upper part that was used to hold the firearm and a lower part that was used to fire the cartridge. The trigger had three parts: an actuating portion that was inserted into the stock, a sear or striker, and a return spring. The trigger became more sophisticated in 18th century. Aahu Firearms Company developed a new type of trigger called "trigger safety." Trigger safety refers to the fact that when you press the button on the trigger, it releases only one round from the chamber. This is different from other types of triggers where you have to pull back on the gun handle before releasing the round. Trigger safeties also allowed for more rapid firing without having to clean your weapon multiple times per minute. However, because so much emphasis was placed upon firepower in 19th century society, many shooters began using confusing and difficult-to-use triggers which caused accidents and injuries. In response, some manufacturers began designing simplerTrigger systems which could be operated with just one hand without needing any extra fingers or tools. These newer designs became known as single action pistols (SAPs). Single action pistols were eventually replaced by automatic pistols in most societies due to their increased firepower and simplicity

Elmhurst was first settled in 1839 by John A. DeWitt and his family. The town was named afterPeter Elmhurst, the founder of the City of Chicago. In 1847, Elmhurst became a part of the new Cook County, Illinois. In 1902, Elmhurst merged with neighboring Girard to form what is now Girard-Elmhurst School District #2. The early settlers were mostly farmers and their families. They raised corn, cattle and hogs, but also built homes and started a few businesses. Over time, Elmhurst became an important community in Cook County for its residents' high quality of life and its close proximity to downtown Chicago. In 1915, the city council decided to build a large new school on South State Street in what is now Elmhurst. The original building was completed in 1923 and served as the district's headquarters until it was replaced by the current structure in 2002. That same year saw the opening of a new elementary school on West110th Street in nearby Glenview which served as the district's second headquarters until it was replaced by the current structure in 2006. Today, there are over 3000 residents living within Elmhurst boundaries - all contributing to one big community that has been thriving for more than 100 years!
