Elmhurst was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, situated on the banks of the Chicago River. The population was 1,682 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is one of the oldest towns in Cook County and has been called "the Athens of the Midwest." It was founded in 1824 by John P. Elmhurst and his brother-in-law David Block. The first settler in Elmhurst was David Block who came to Elmhurst from Boston in 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now Second Street near where First Street meets Washington Avenue. In 1825, John P. Elmhurst moved his family to Elmhurst from Boston and opened a general store which became known as the "Emmhursts' Store." In 1830, John P.'s son Samuel married Martha Cavanaugh and they started a home farm that became known as "Cavanaugh's Farm". They also raised chickens and hogs on their farm until about 1850 when they bought land adjacent to what is now State Street for $800. This lot would later become part of Village Square and serve as the site for both elmhurts High School (now Roosevelt High School) and Village Hall (now Community House). In 1853, Jephcott Ladd purchased 240 acres (10 km²) east of villageSquare from Samuel Cavanaugh for $2,500 plus interest; this purchase served as Elmhurst's central square until it burned down in 1928. It was not until after World War II that Village Square received its present name: Elmhurst Village Center. The original buildings were destroyed by fire but replaced with new ones within six months following the firestorm that devastated much of downtownChicago during 1945-46; these include City Hall (now Community House), Police Station #1 (now Bannister Library), Post Office (#1), Arena Stadium #3 (/ formerly Maynard Gymnasium), Public Schools Building #2 (/formerly Manchester Elementary School), North Side Baptist Church (/formerly First Congregationalist Church) - only two remaining original buildings today remain: North Side Baptist Church - originally built before 1915 - while City Hall /Post Office still stands circa 1976
Elmhurst was founded in 1836 by Alexander Elmhurst. The town was named after the Elmhurst Hills, a section of the city of Chicago that had been annexed into Elmhurst. The first post office was established in 1837 and closed in 1841. In 1840, Elmhurst became an independent village and also had its own school district. In 1865, Elmhurst merged with neighboring Yorkville to form a new municipality. On May 1, 1919, the township of Yorkville merged with Elmhurst to create another municipality called Elmhurst Township. On July 1, 1984, all municipalities within Elmhurst Township were dissolved and absorbed into the City of Chicago.
