Elmhurst is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1846 by George Hennepin and his brother Amos Hennepin as a farmstead on the east side of the Chicago River. They named it for their uncle Elijah Elmhurst (1780-1851), an American Revolutionary War general and founder of what would become Minneapolis. John Pritzker, first Mayor ofChicago, grew up in Elmhurst and attended school there before moving to Oak Park Heights in 1905. Elmhurst's first post office opened in 1847. The town was chartered on November 15, 1852, under the name of "Cookstown." In 1870 it renamed itself "Elmhurst." The first store in Elmhurst was built by George Hennepin and Fenton Keyes; it closed around 1903 because of low sales. In 1898 ownership changed hands three times with three different people obtaining control: Charles Ladd bought it from Jens Weidner on December 6th; Harry Knoeller took over January 1st 1899 when his father died; and James Gorman purchased it February 16th from Newton Atherton who had leased it from Mr. Weidner four months earlier. Gorman operated a grocery store until 1912 when he merged with Waukegan Grocery Company to form Lake Shore Mercantile Company which became Waukegan Mercantile Corporation in 1922 also known as Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated (SRC). In 1954 Sears sold its entire retail arm to Montgomery Ward Company for $2 billion making Elmhurst one of the last independent towns within Cook County to be absorbed into larger municipalities such as Chicago or Oak Park Heights/North Side respectively
