The first gun owner in Elmhurst was Isaac Chapman, who had owned land west of the village. He made his first sale of firearms to citizens on November 12, 1868. The early years of gun protection in Elmhurst were marked by skirmishes and robberies between farmers and hunters. In 1875, two men were killed when they were shot at from a barn near the village square. The next year saw the founding of an armory and police department as part as responses to these challenges. In 1902, Mayor John Ahern ordered all farms within one mile of town limits to provide arms for their residents. This order led to increased hostilities between farmers and hunters, which again led to shootings and robberies across town lines. In 1907, Mayor Richard Larkin approved legislation prohibiting handguns without a license from being possessed within city limits. This law remained in effect until 1966 when it was repealed due to court rulings that handgun possession is not considered a crime under Illinois law

The Elmhurst Agricultural Company was founded in 1899 and continues to produce goods such as flour and feed; eggs; cheese; butter; applesauce; potatoes; onions; carrots; garlic bulbs; lilies (Sweet Lysimachia), roses (Roses"), chrysanthemums (Caucasian Hydrangea), lilies (Lysimachia), lavender (Hedera heliosa) and daffodils (Narcissus). Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Elmhurst was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who landed on the present-day shore of Lake Michigan on October 25, 1795 while exploring the area for a fur trading post. He named his settlement after Sir George Dearborn, 1st Baronet of Elwood (1763–1835), British general and governor of India. First built as a log cabin village on Conte's land near what is now the northern edge of Elmhurst Township, it grew rapidly into a thriving community with its own schoolhouse and churches by 1802. In 1805, local resident Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of France under the rule of Joseph I; during his occupancy of Paris, he had several meetings with American Revolutionary War leaders such as John Adams and James Kieft. On July 14th, 1810 French troops invaded Illinois and burned down some buildings in Elmhurst; this event is historically credited as starting the American Revolution in that state. During its heyday as a vibrant community full of farmers and men working their farms and businesses around Buffalo Road and State Street (now known as South Holland Avenue), Elmhurst boasted more than 100 homes – all either contributing to or enjoying direct sunlight from two large windowbooths facing Buffalo Road across from where today’s Post Office stands. In addition to its schools (the first being built in 1802), churches (the first being erected in 1825) and stores/factories (the first store opened in 1827), Elmhurst also boasted an excellent water system which enabled residents to irrigate their crops without having to leave their homes! When passenger trains started running through Cook County during the late 1800s bringing workers into town for jobs on various railroad projects such as canal work or construction,[1] banks began opening up throughout Cook County due to increased business opportunities resulting from these new arrivals.[2] One such shop founded by banker Abraham Lincoln close to where today’s intersection Clinton Boulevard & Willard Avenue sits was called The Lincoln Bank[3], later renamed The Second National Bank after Abraham Lincoln became President Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential Candidate in 1908 when he ran against Samuel J Dixon for Illinois Governor [4]. With increasing economic activity within town limits came increased social unrest beginning with occasional riots between locals over trivial issues until eventually culminating with violence following nativist agitation leading up to World War II when many immigrant families moving into town were targeted by white supremacists groups who vandalized properties along Buffalo Road[5].
