Elmhurst is a village located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the larger Chicago–Naperville–Elmhurst Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Elmhurst was John Cushing who arrived in 1829. In 1830 he and his family built a log cabin on what is now the corner of Plum and Van Buren Streets. In 1836, Jacob Ransom established Cushman & Co., an earlyChicago cotton broker and trust company that still exists today as ILR Capital Partners LLC. A post office called Elmhurst was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. The town of Elmhurst was organized on November 5, 1847 from parts of Cicero Township, Kane County. The first president of the Village Board was George Fenton McCormick Sr.. The first mayor was Lorenzo Hogue Worthy. On July 1, 1955, Elmhurst became one of eighteen towns (along with Plainfield and Lisle) to become part of the newly created Lake Forest–Oakland Park Community Unit which included portions of Oak Lawn and Westchester counties. The total population for Elmhurst declined over time; by 2000 it had fallen below 2,000 people
Elmhurst was founded in 1827 by George Washington Elmhurst and his wife Lucy. The Elmhurst Academy, now Elmhurst Community College, was founded in 1892. In 1907, the city of Elmhurst bought the land that is now Elmhurst Cemetery and Park from the United States Government for $1 million.
