In 1870–71, an experimental public school system called "The Prairie School" was established with four schools: one for free colored students, one for white students who paid tuition, one for boys only, and one for girls only. Elmhurst has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and it was formally organized as a village on November 8, 1871. On July 15, 1907, Elmhurst became the first incorporated city in Kane County. In 1971, Elmhurst merged with neighboring Dunwoody to form one large city. The Village of Elmhurst was founded on November 8th 1871 by Drury and his family who were looking for an open space to farm and raise cattle on their land that they had purchased from Mr. White (a white man). After several years of development work by Drury's sons and daughters this land was dedicated officially to the village on December 5th 1872 when Mayor John D'Arcy delivered a speech announcing that "the people of this village have resolved themselves into a community." The name 'Elmhurst' comes from two weeks before Christmas when Drury observed: "I feel like I am living in an Elfenland" which means he felt like he had found his paradise home because of how well his land fit into the natural environment around him; ". . . We are going to live here all our lives". On July 15th 1907, Elmhurst became one of the first incorporation cities in Kane County when it merged with neighboring Dunwoody to form one large city. At its peak there were over 20 businesses operating within walking distance of each other making it easy for citizens to get information or meet friends while visiting their hometown. With so many businesses active there must have been plenty of opportunities for socializing and enjoying life outside the workplace! Unfortunately during World War II most commercial activity ceased due toBombing raids which took place throughout Kane County including Elmhurst; however some residents did manage to keep their businesses running until after the war ended thanks to government sponsorship programs such as Wartime Credit Union which provided loans at low interest rates for business owners who needed money quick during wartime times.
