Today's Elmhurst is one of Chicago's oldest communities with Indian ancestry dating back to before Europeans ever arrived in this area; however, most residents today are white or Hispanic descended from European immigrants who came here during the late 19th century and early 20th century when technological advances made farming possible on large tracts of land that had once been considered forested areas.

In 1958, Elmhurst was renamed Elmhurst-Haleyville after Haleyville, Kentucky, which had been merged into Illinois days earlier.
