Elmhurst, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 21,574 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1855 by General John A. Richardson as a stop on the road from Rockford to Lockport. Prior to its incorporation as a village in 1906, Elmhurst was an agricultural community with only a few buildings and about 100 residents. In 1906, Elmhurst became the first municipality in Cook County to be organized using electric streetlights and water carriers. In recent years, Elmhurst has become known for its popular culture, including its annual "Elmhurstfest" festival which features local music and arts performances throughout September. The village also offers several hundred acres (800 ha) of parkland that includes two baseball diamonds and a golf Course. The name "Elmhurst" comes from two different sources: one originates from a natural creek that flows through the town and another comes from early settler George Waddell's purchase of 640 acres (250 ha) of swampy land adjacent to present-day Elmhurst when he bought property near Rockford in 1836. Waddell named his new tract "Elmhurst" after his old home in England where he had gone on vacation during the year before purchasing it.

The Elmhurst community of Illinois was founded in 1814 by two German farmers, Johann Gottlieb August Meyer and Wilhelm Friedrich Hecker. The area that is now Elmhurst was part of the much larger village of Chicago. The first recorded settler in Elmhurst was Nicholas Suter, who arrived in 1815. By 1821, the population of Elmhurst had grown to over 100 people. In 1830, a school was built in what is now the North Park neighborhood of Elmhurst. In 1836, John Pritzker bought land adjacent to the current day Elmhurst Cemetery for $2,000. Pritzker named his property "Elmhurst" after his family's home country of Germany. He also donated some land to the Village for schools and a park. By 1840, there were over 150 people living in Elmhurst and it had become an important center for trade and commerce within Chicago's city limits. A courthouse and jail were built in nearby Wrightwood around this time as well.
