During World War II, many industrial plants were built or converted into military installations around Elmhurst; these include Hanford Radiation Lab on Southeastern Boulevard near Cicero Avenue and White Sands Missile Range off Northwest Side Drive near Griggs Road; both sites are now inactive but remain contributing historical factors to local tourism attractions such as golf courses designed by Tom Doherty/Bryson & Woods Golf Course at Hanford National Laboratory northwest of downtown Chicago) In 1967–1968, after predictions that high levels of lead would be found near Mount Prospects Elementary School due mostly to emissions from nearby South Korean factories manufacturing ironclad warships during that era's "Korea syndrome" scare,[1] community members formed a group known as "Lead Citizens for Health Equity"[2] which lobbied then-Mayor Richard Mollohan III unsuccessfully for public education campaigns targeting children living near mount Prospects Elementary School until they closed down following federal testing results showing no significant lead exposure among those students living there at that time
