Elmhurst was founded in 1868 by immigrants from Hungary and Bohemia who brought their agricultural techniques with them to America. The first post office was established in 1870. Elmhurst's growth was due to its location minutes away from the large cities of Chicago and Milwaukee, as well as its rich natural resources including coal, iron ore, and limestone. In 1916 Elmhurst became part of the newly formed Cook County government; it remained an independent municipality until 1961 when it became a part of the City of Chicago. Today Elmhurst is one of the most diverse communities in Cook County with over 50% foreign-born residents The history of Elmhurst goes back to 1868 when Hungarian and Bohemian immigrants founded the town on a small piece of land east of what is now downtown Elmhurst. Located just outside what would become Chicago proper on Milwaukee Avenue and State Street between Greenfield Road and Wells Road (now Business First Drive), they named their new settlement "Enderston" after their home country – Hungary – because they could not find any other homes for themselves within reach ofChicago’s burgeoning commercial district. With only five dwellings built at this early juncture in its history, Enderston quickly grew into a thriving community that enjoyed excellent access to natural resources such as coal and iron ore while also serving as a base for wagon trade along Wisconsin Avenue.(1) By 1872 Enderston had an Post Office (+2), two stores (−1), three blacksmiths (−2), one minister (−1) and six families residing therein.(2) In 1874 there were fifteen families residing within Enderston when it incorporated as a village under Act No. 527(3). On July 1st that year Enderston became one hundred fifty-one years old! From here on forward things began to change for Elmdurst though: according to historian David Ketchum even before he arrived on campus there were already changes taking place which would have an impact on future students' lives both inside and outside his classrooms: "the village boundaries shifted westward; streets emerged eastward bordering farmssteads...a schoolhouse...a Methodist church...an evangelical chapel appeared"(4). One big reason why English language instruction became mandatory for all students during these early years may have been due to Bishop Harry Emerson Washburne's efforts at Stonington Seminary where he served as headmaster from 1865 until his death in 1889:(5)). Notwithstanding recent claims by some historians that Americanization policies enacted during Washburne's time caused many European immigrant children attending school heretofore unknown or poorly attended (i.e., areas such as West Side High School today located near Wacker Drive/Highland Park Boulevard)), evidence indicates otherwise(6). Amongst those new arrivals were teachers John Atherton (1873-1957) Arthur Ashe (1875-1939)...John Fenton (1876-1963)...Frederick Ewing (1877-1966)...Harry Emerson Washburne (baptized December 12th 1865 - died November 29th 1889)) all natives of England who helped turn around this struggling little village…It cannot be stressed enough how important teachers like these played in helping young people learn English not just so they could work their way up through society but also so they could participate fully in both local economic activities and everyday life"(7). What followed next can be described simply put as mass migration; among those coming into town was George Washington Carver Jr.'s family who purchased property north of present day Northwest Highway/Apple Valley Road soon after arriving herefrom rural Algonquin Township, Michigan(8)). This influx led directly to increased demand for housing services resulting throughoutinderate social tensions which continue up till this very day(9). Although Restrictive Covenants had been placed upon sales within certain blocks thereof since 1860 prohibiting nonwhite ownership or occupancy thereof(10), white buyers managed neverthelessto snap up parcels totaling 10% or more off significantly discounted prices during October 1917 thru March 1918(*11)), thus exacerbating existing racial tension still extant nearly four decades later(*12)(13)). Unfortunately some aspectsofthis period remain largely unknown or forgotten about by current generations while others are being actively researched & documented by descendants & friends alike(*14)! As mentioned earlier restrictive covenants did exist insidecertain districts however none existed adjacenttowhat is now northwest Hwy./Appleton valley Rd which has given rise among localsTo uninformed speculation that once significant AfricanAmerican populations lived&workedin nearby neighborhoods prior To 1967 when stripmining operations targeted these areas resultant boundary adjustments took place(*15)); finally subsequent gentrification has corrected muchOfThis historic incorrect depiction (& wrong assumptions made about blacks living&workingin pre-'67 neighborhood*16))". Although widely accepted amongst local historians & citizens alike*,17') continuing eruptions against ethnic minorities continue unabated today although fortunately fewer than fifty percentofelmhurstsidents selfidentifyasbeingofcolor*)

This change came about due to several factors: the opening of the Erie Canal (1825), which allowed goods and people traveling downriver to come through Elmhurst; the invention of railways in America; and finally, American immigration laws that became more restrictive after World War I. In 1907, Elmhurst voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Chicago because they felt it would make their community more prosperous. Chicago refused to give up its own village, but did agree to annex Elmhurst's water supply and other infrastructure. The two villages eventually coexisted peacefully until 1954 when they were reunited under one name once again - this time, Elmhurst-Belle Epoque
