The first settler in what is now Elmhurst was John Sinclair who arrived on May 7, 1838 from Canada with his family. His parents were Andrew Sinclair and Ann (Ferguson) Sinclair. The first post office in what is now Elmhurst opened on November 15, 1839 and was named for John Sinclair's father-in-law Drury Hennepin. In 1845 Drury Hennepin donated land to the village for a school district which would include all of present day Elmhurst Township; this donation became known as "Drury Field".

Elmhurst, Illinois was founded in 1809 by a group of farmers who left the village of Elmira, New York. Nicolay, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of War; Cornelius Vanderbilt; Harry S Truman; and Floyd Abrams, one of the most influential lawyers in American history. Nicolay served as President Wilson's Ambassador to Russia and later helped found Harvard University. He is also given credit for helping develop America's response to World War I. Abraham Lincoln was born in Elmhurst and spent much of his childhood there before moving to Springfield at age 10. After serving in Congress from 1865-1867 (where he played an important role in developing modern progressive Republicanism), he ran for Governor of Illinois in 1868 but lost narrowly to Simon Cameron. In 1872 Lincoln moved back into Elmhurst where he died eight years later at age 56 after a long career as an executive officer in the Ulysses S Grant administration
Elmhurst was founded in 1853 by John C. Clemens and his wife, Susannah. The town developed around the Elmhurst Cemetery, which was first opened in 1838. In 1865, Elmhurst became a city and it has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Illinois.
