Elmhurst, Illinois is a small town located in the heart of Cook County. It was established in 1837, and has remained a sleepy community ever since. However, over time Elmhurst has become known for its gun barrels history. The first guns in Elmhurst were pistols. The village had just one store and no means to purchase firearms, so citizens were forced to make do with handguns. This didn’t last long though, as early residents began to bring in rifles and shotguns from nearby towns. By 1845 there were two stores, each selling different types of firearms. One sold ammunition, the other Firearms! In 1898 the city of Chicago annexed Elmhurst and many of the homes within it became part of the new city limits. Gun barrel production shifted from Elmhurst to Chicago however, as production costs increased here due to imported materials. Gun barrels continued to be produced here until World War II when all manufacturing stopped because of wartime restrictions on arms export (the US did not allow any European countries to produce assault rifles). Today few remnants remain of old gun barrels factories in Elmhurst- most have been bulldozed together or replaced by housing developments. However there are still a few old buildings that offer a unique glimpse into the past at this small town located right next to Cook County Jail!

Elmhurst was founded in 1847 as a small village on the west side of Chicago by George Fenton and his family. The name originated from a large Elm tree near their farmstead. In 1853, when Elmhurst became an incorporated town, it had only 5 residents. In 1907, the city of Chicago annexed much of Cook County and Elmhurst became part of that city's boundaries. At that time, its population numbered only 811 people; however, by 1960 it had increased to over 21,000 people. That growth led to some major changes in the community – including the construction of two new schools (John Marshall High School and Gratz High School) and completion of several streetscape projects such as Memorial Drive and Courtland Drive. The current downtown core of Elmhurst was developed during this time as well with many housing developments such as Riverside Place being built specifically for families fearantzonation like prohibition which discouraged drunk driving or other vices which could lead to lawbreaking among those who lived there (the original townsite consisted mostly of open prairie). As more people continued moving into the community from outlying areas throughout Cook County (and elsewhere), crime rates began to decrease even further until they reached their recent levels; however some concerns still remain about high levels of poverty and gun violence within the community especially in light of recent mass shootings which have occurred within its borders both anecdotally and graphically (most recently Sutherland Springs Elementary School shooting where 26 children were killed before gunman Devin Kelley fled). In 1847, Congress passed an act that vested in the city of Chicago all lands west of State Street and south of Washington Boulevard. This included Elmhurst, which became part of the new city on January 1, 1848. On November 4, 1895, Elmhurst voted to secede from Cook County and become its own independent municipality. In 1902–03 Elmhurst built a school Annex with $2,500 worth of lumber and equipment donated by John Pitkin. The Annex School building still stands today as headquarters for District 203 School District (Cook County). On July 27th 1908 Mayor Richard Mather dedicated a new park adjacent to Wabash Avenue in honorof General George Armstrong Custer who had died two years earlier while serving in World War I at age 24 after being decorated with three Medals Of Honor including one for bravery under fire duringthe Battle Of Gettysburg In 1918 local boy Floyd Enloe created a playground called Enloe Playground which remains open to this day
The Elmhurst community was founded in 1855 by Methodist ministers, who named it for the Elmhurst tree that stands near the center of town. The first residents were mostly farmers and their families, but over time they began to include workers from nearby towns. In 1886, a sawmill and grist mill were built in Elmhurst and quickly became one of the town's main sources of income. In 1907, the first electric lights were installed in Elmhurst. At this time, Elmhurst had a population of about 350 people. By 1920, however, the population had decreased to 100 people and by 1930 it had fallen to 50 people. In 1939, the last home in Elmhurst was sold and the community ceased to exist.
