Elmhurst is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what became Elmhurst were members of the Methodist Church who arrived from New York in 1814. By 1825, there were six churches in Elmhurst and one school. In 1846, Reverend Wm. Swayne organized a Methodist church on the corner of State Street and North Avenue in Elmhurst which would later become known as First Presbyterian Church (now St John's Episcopal). In 1868 Rev. Moses Eller founded Second Presbyterian Church which still exists today on Neely Road just south of I-90 exit 191A. Eastman Kodak Company had its headquarters on State Street between Elmhurst Boulevard and Lake Michigan until it moved to Rochester Hills in 1959; however, Kodak retained some vestiges of its Elmhurst operation such as an office building on State Street that still stands today. In 1888 the city of Chicago annexed what was then rural Du Page County and created their own municipality by annexing all but two townships within Du Page County - Arlington Heights to the north and Glenview to the east - with overlapping boundaries with Elmhurst Township including most of present day Elmhurst except for a small section along South Side Drive immediately adjacent to Aurora Savings Bank (now Wells Fargo) where development continued until after World War II when zoning laws changed making much of this unincorporated land zoned for industrial use only although certain sections near Aurora Savings Bank have been developed into new neighborhoods called "Old Town" or "Uptown". A post office was established at Elmsford in 1888, but mail no longer reached residents there until 1914 when a new ZIP code was assigned: 62401 due to increased postage rates being offered by telephone companies operating out of Chicago at that time; postmasters at both Elmsford and Glenview refused to accept stamped envelopes sent throughChicago as they were not able to change or mail addresses back then (the old postmaster buildings are still standing). Elmhurst now falls within zip code 60619 having previously been stretching outside its original boundaries just east of Interstate 90 exit 191A; this change has led some people to refer to Elk Grove Village as "Elmwood".
