Elmhurst was founded in 1848 by the Reverend John Brown and his wife, Polly. The town grew quickly due to its location on a bend in the Chicago River and its close relationship with the city. In 1857, Elmhurst became a village, and in 1870 it became an incorporated town. The townsite was renamed Elmhurst after Mrs. Brown's husband, Dr. Samuel Brown, who died in 1881. The browns also donated land for a public school and other civic purposes.
