Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Elmhurst community began as a result of an invitation from Mayor John Fenton to build a new high school in his city. On December 15, 1916, the first students arrived at Elmhurst High School and classes began on January 5th, 1917. The two-story schoolhouse with a main classroom and three smaller classrooms was built on what was then called "Old Main Street". It had been donated by Mrs. Anna Kappelman and her husband George Nye for $5 per acre (equivalent to about $ ). In 1926, Elmhurst opened its doors to ninth through twelfth graders under the name Stonington Hills High School. This name change followed that of nearby Thornton Park which had been closed for many years due to lack of students. In 1957, Stonington Hills merged with neighboring Arlington Heights and became Elmhurst-Arlington Heights Joint Vocational School District No. 1 where it remains today. In 1969, Elmhurst-Arlington Heights Joint Vocational School District No. 2 merged with another district - this time Lombard East Side Joint Vocational School District - creating what is now known as Lombard Township Public Schools; however, all educational services still remain centralized within Elmhurst Elementary/Middle School &HSD #1 until such time that new construction or renovation projects are completed there which will then move all services into HSD #2 which is currently being constructed adjacent to HSD #1 between 600 South Cass Avenue and 620 West Adams Avenue! The former HSD #2 building across from current HSD #1 currently houses Elmhurts administration offices while the groundbreaking for HSD #2 is scheduled to take place in early 2019 once criminal prosecutions have concluded in both buildings! On April 26th 1943 local resident Milton Sutherlin donated land bordering Buffalo Road east of downtown Elmhurst for use as an airport named after him along with cash donations totaling $10 000 (equivalent to about $ ). With World War II raging on and air traffic increasing during those days airmail was vital so Operation Crossroads took place on September 12th 1945 when over 100 bombers flew over downtown Elmhurst delivering supplies & ammunition directly drop off points while also providing target practice; one bomb even crashed into First National Bank just south of center causing extensive damage! That same day Douglas Aircraft Company opened their production line at this newly donated airport making Douglas Aircraft Incorporated one of America's leading aircraft manufacturers! In 1946 following World War II aerial refueling operations were discontinued when IMA decided against using open fields near airports due to concerns about potential environmental damage caused by aviation waste ingestion . . . unfortunately these decisions led directly to soil erosion associated with heavy industry & agricultural activity overlying municipal soils necessitating expensive dredging operation which has continued ever since! All told EO&I spent approximately $50 million ($ in 2016) + millions more annually prior thereto remediation & restoration efforts since WWII cleaning up hazardous materials related KOA’s commenced including Tilt Brennan Airport located 3 miles SE of present day Elmhurst renamed Willowbrook Airport after late City Manager Donnell Brennan who spearheaded much thereof – sorry Donnell but he would not be alive today if it wasn’t for us!) This location served as Headquarters Squadron 14TH AIRBOROUGH Wing during Operations Desert Storm flying combat missions from October 1990 thru January 1991! The property remained vacant until 1994 when it was leased back by USARP HQ Southern Illinois until May 2001 when it became Ops Support Center IHOU Hereafter known as PERSHEMA herewith support continuing thru Dec 31st 2006 !! Elmhurst is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,425 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Elmhurst was founded in 1871 by landowner John P. Donahue as a small farming community on the shores of Lake Michigan. After years of growth and development, Elmhurst became an incorporated village on July 1, 1903. The township which included Elmhurst was organized January 4, 1892 into one large municipality with a total population of 5,000 residents before it merged into Cook County on January 1, 1895. On November 3rd 1909 voters passed a referendum to become independent from Cook County and incorporate as a separate city under the name "Elmhurst". This move came about because City Hall had been built within the limits of what is now Elmhurst while City Hall located in greater Chicago was expanded to include more than half its current boundaries by 1959 when it merged with Hinsdale Township and Park Forest Township (both located in DuPage County). The city's first mayor was Edward J. Byrne who served from 1915 until his death in 1934; he also chaired the city's Planning Commission for many years prior to that position being filled by Mayor George Ryan who held office from 1945 until his death in 1967; Ryan alsoserved on the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board during his term as mayor. On December 14th 1957 - following an election where all candidates but incumbent Mayor George Ryan were re-elected - Ryan announced he would not seek reelection after serving out his full four-year term which expired at midnight on December 15th 1957 due to term limits set forth in state law at that time – setting off another mayoral race between him and challenger Richard Maughan who had been elected to fill out Donnahue's unexpired term ending February 15th 1958 (Maughan would eventually be elected Mayor). In 1966 – just three years after becoming an independent city – Elmhurst amalgamated with neighboring Hinsdale Township forming Elmont Heights annexed thereto having had no say or vote in either decision other than through incorporation proceedings initiated by both municipalities themselves simultaneously without any notification or consent from either party’s respective membership therein (the annexation proceeding has never been terminated even though Elmont Heights formally ceased to exist as an entity upon incorporation). In 1979 however following efforts spearheaded by then Mayor Richard Maughan culminating with passage of legislation operative pursuant thereto imposing stricter zoning laws upon newly annexed communities including those within Elmont Heights itself rendering such annexations illegal since such communities did not meet all eligibility requirements laid down for incorporation herein) boundary changes resulting therefrom were made effective retroactive to date thereby restoring balance & order wherein only those portions of Elmont Heights lying adjacent thereto currently residing within their original municipal boundaries are presently subject to taxation & governance via ordinances enacted thereunder while portions thereof lying beyond said boundaries still considered part thereof by virtue of their location within said original municipal borders have never been so taxed nor governed although annexation/incorporation proceedings continue ongoing notwithstanding) today’sCity layout & governmental structure remain largely unchanged relative to when these changes took place nearly fifty years ago
