Elmhurst is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,206 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst was founded in 1871 by Yankees who were moving to America and settled on the east side of Chicago. Elmhurst's ZIP code is 60604. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst has a rich history dating back to 1871 when Yankees moved to America and settled on the east side of Chicago. A group of them organized themselves into a company and bought 4 acres (1 km²) of land on Dearborn Street in what is now Elmhurst. This was their first stop in America and they named their new town after one of their number: William Hildreth (1814-1900), an American lawyer and politician from New York City who served as U.S. Minister to Russia from 1867-1869 and as Mayor of New York City from 1870-1872. The first post office in Elmhurst opened in 1875, but it did not remain open long because there were no customers interested in sending mail through that route! The only contact people had with each other were via letters which took weeks to travel across the country! In 1886, Cornelius Vanderbilt donated 9 acres (3 ha) adjacent to his Hyde Park home for use as a public square; this became known as Vanderbilt Square after him. In 1898, John D’Arcy Walshe donated 2 acres (8 km²) adjoining his house on Pulaski Road for use as a park; this became known as Walshe Park after him too! In 1903, another Yankee donation – 8 acres (3 ha) on O’Hare Boulevard west of Cicero Avenue – became available for purchase by the Village Board for $5,000; this becameknown as Prospect Heights after Mr. Walshe himself! It wasn’t until 1907 that an electric streetcar line called “The Duluth Line” arrived at Elmhurst; this allowed residents easy access to all that southern Indiana had to offer! From 1908 until 1925 there was also an electric bus line called “The Silver Lake Line” which operated between Lombard Avenue/Euclid Avenue near Elston High School and Prospect Heights/Walsh Park; however it ceased operations due to financial reasons shortly before World War II began!

Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Elmhurst were farmers who came there from Northern Indiana in the 1840s. They raised corn, beans, and other vegetables until about 1870 when they began to build cotton plantations near where they currently live. One of the earliest businesses in Elmhurst was a shoe store run by Prentice Ayres. In 1875, he built a grocery store on State Street which became one of the largest stores in Elmhurst and across Cook County. In 1876–77, Fenton Higgins built an extensive brick building on West Seventh Street with room for 100 customers and later added an opera house which still stands today. He was one of the most successful businessmen in Elmhurst and his businesses prospered until he died in 1907 at age 83 years old. He is buried at Rosehill Cemetery near his business partners Prentice Ayres and Fenton Higgins. The three entrepreneurs are also significant donors to many local charities including First Unitarian Church (now St John’s Episcopal), William McKinley High School (now MacArthur High School), Elmhurst Kiwanis Club No 4 & 5 (now Trinity United Methodist Church), as well as Holy Cross Catholic Church located just east of town off Cicero Avenue
The Elmhurst community was organized in 1854. It was incorporated as a town in 1855 and became an city in 1915.
