Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,001 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Elmhurst community began as a farming village located on the east side of Chicago. In 1873, Mr. and Mrs. George Sibley purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land southwest of Elmhurst from the Peabody family for $3 per acre (1/8th of a hectare). The Sibleys used their land to raise chickens and pigs and to grow vegetables for sale in their home kitchen garden; they also built a two-story house on the property that served as their farm headquarters until 1896 when they moved to their current location on Deerfield Road. In 1907, Dutch settlers arrived in what is now Elmhurst and started an agricultural cooperative named De Valkenburgh Farms with 11 survivors from Holland who had emigrated to America in 1906. The De Valkenburgh Cooperative was later renamed Dutch American Land Company after its first president Diederik van der Velde died suddenly in 1914 while traveling in western Canada; he had been helping his brother Jacob run the cooperative since its inception thirteen years earlier. Dutch Americans soon became dominant among early Elmhurst residents; by 1925 there were more than 100 Dutch Americans living here. Most notable members of this group were John Aiken (1901-1986), who owned Aiken's grocery store on Deerfield Rd., Edwin Haughton (1886-1967), owner or operator of several local transportation companies including Elgin & North Side Railway Company #2 which ran between Elgin and North Side Streets near present day Western Avenue & Higgins Road, Cornelius "Pete" Pohlman (1902-1987), co-owner or manager of Zions Banknorth store at 7th Street - across from Park Meadows Shopping Center - and Harry Bausch (1903-1993). After World War II many Dutch Americans left Elmhurst for good due to economic problems within the Netherland colony during that time period; however, some remain as socialitesalbeit without commercial activitiesin downtown Elmhurst today while others continue farming operations within close proximity to their homes. In 1847, the Illinois legislature passed a bill establishing Elmhurst as a town. The first meeting of the town board was held on October 22, 1847. On November 8 of that year, the town board voted to accept a plat from Nathan Salkin. The first building in Elmhurst was built in honor of J.H. Pratt (an early settler) and his family.
