In addition to shotguns and handguns, rifles were also popular in this time period. Ammunition manufacturers made different types of ammunition for these different uses. In 1847, a company named Stone Arabia began manufacturing firearms in Elmhurst. This company produced pistols and revolvers using only black powder explosives. The company quickly became well-known throughout Illinois due to their high quality products and their innovative designs. In 1859, Stone Arabia merged with another firearms manufacturer, Armstrong & Company. This merger created a new company called Armstrong-Stone Arms Company Ltd., which continued producing firearms until 1907. Throughout the 1800s, Elmhurst residents were able to purchase various types of ammunition from various companies that manufactured it here in town. Some of these companies include: Stone Arabia (1847-1859), Armstrong & Company (1860-1907), and finally Browning Arms Corporation (1907-present). Each company had its own unique product line that contributed to the town’s reputation as a center for firearm production excellence throughout the years!

Elmhurst was once a thriving agricultural community and now has an economy based largely on services and retail trade. The Elmhurst School District serves most of the town. Elmhurst is located in east-central Cook County at (41.560912, -87.859444). It lies on both sides of the Chicago River between Park Ridge to the north and South Holland to the south; it surrounds much of a large urban area with few natural resources. According to the 2010 census, Elmhurst had a total area of , all land. The town was founded in 1856 by wealthy landowner Amos Tuttle as part of his purchase from Peabody Coal Company president Jeremiah Wadsworth for $2 million (). The first post office was established in 1857; it closed in 1907 because there were no mail carriers available to serve rural areas within . In 1867, Tuttle donated 5 acres (20 hectares) southeast of what is now Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center to be used as a public school district headquarters; this gift remains one of its primary assets today (). In 1870, he also donated 100 acres (40 hectares) west of what is now Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center to be used as a new town center (); this donation remains one of its primary assets today (). In 1888, Mayor John Jervis dedicated two small parcels adjoining present-day Kenwood Avenue () for use as public square (), which still stands today as one corner of Elmhurst's Main Street business district (). By 1890, more than 50 businesses had opened up around what became known as "The Square", which included 119 stores and 12 restaurants combined employing 468 people (). In 1897–99, residents voted unanimously not to annex any other towns into their municipality (); instead they formed their own village called "Central City" () with similar boundaries but different governing officers (). This decision served as an early warning system that future annexations would not be approved due to lacklustre support from voters (). Despite having no municipalities within its borders (), Central City rapidly grew into one of Illinois' leading commercial communities ; by 1910 it boasted over 150 businesses and ranks fifth among Cook County's villages with respect to size and employment (behind Wood Dale (), Glenview (), Prospect Heights () and Rockford ). However, during World War I Central City experienced tremendous growth when many industries closed down or moved out while others shifted their production overseas ; by 1919 Central City had reached 200 businesses and employed 1,500 people (. Although much smaller than Aurora or Schaumburg ())). During World War II Central City again experienced rapid growth when many industries reopened up while others shifted their production overseas ; by 1945 its population had reached 350 businesses and employed 3 thousand people (. Although much smaller than Aurora or Schaumburg ())). By 1960Central City's population had fallen back below 300 businesses overall () but it still retains some high-level jobs such as those at Kane Hall University Hospital . Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst was founded in 1857 by Danish immigrants as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on winding creek beds within easy walking distance of downtownChicago and its proximity to timberlands and other natural resources. The community name "Elmhurst" comes from a large sycamore tree near the original village center which had been brought over by the founders of Elmhurst as a gift from King Frederick II of Denmark. In 1905, Elmhurst became one of several towns in Cook County that were consolidated with neighboring Janesville into what is now known as Lake Forest Township. In 1912, Elmhurst was incorporated as a city and has remained an independent municipality ever since. Elihu Root Elementary School (now closed) served as the first school in Elmhurst and opened in 1875; it was replaced by Stony Brook High School in 1928. From 1909 until 1925, Elmhurst Colored High School operated out of two buildings on State Street between Pineapple Avenue and Ridge Road; this school was eventually replaced by John Marshall Junior High School which opened shortly before World War II when all high schools were segregated along racial lines in Illinois under state law then known as "The Fair Housing Act". In 1961, when Elmhurst ceased to be an independent municipality and became part of Lake Forest Township once again, Stony Brook High School continued serving both students from Elk Grove Village who transferred there from adjacent Janesville Schools during that time period while John Marshall Junior High moved into new facilities on East Side Drive just east of I-94 after being converted from an all-girls grammar school for African Americans into male-only status following passage of Title IX legislation making girls' education available to those who desired it nationwide (See also: history section below). During his time as Mayor (1981-1983), David Daley signed landmark legislation creating Park Districts throughout the city limits while still retaining full control over municipal services - including funding for Parks - through City Council membership rather than through mayoral vetoes or committee recommendations despite pressure from powerful business interests who clamored for such deregulation given their increased influence within city government overall at that time period across many areas including finance, transportation, zoning & development regulation etc... Elmhurst was founded in 1837 by John and Anna Elmhurst. The Elmhursts were the first white family to live in the town. In 1865, they moved out of Elmhurst and started their own town, Westchester.
