In 2002, it merged with Northwestern State University to form Northwestern Illinois University–Chicago (NIU-CH). NIU-CH remains a separate university today with its own campus located within Elmhurst Park Community College boundaries. The village of Elmhurst annexed part of neighboring Villa Park in 1915 as part of efforts to create more self-sufficient neighborhoods within Cook County while still remaining close to downtown Chicago through services such as transportation links and emergency response systems from both jurisdictions. This annexation created two new towns: Villa Park North and West were each annexed into Elmhurst between 1915-1917 forming what is today known asSouth Holland Township which borders Elk Grove Village on the south side of Chicago; North Glen Ellyn was annexed into Elmhire between 1917-1920 forming what is now Aurora Township; these annexations did not result in any change to either community's population or government structure until 1945 when South Holland Township lost its charter due to lack of voter approval for change; however Aurora Township continued under city jurisdiction until 1959 when it joined with Elihu Root Academy (now Roosevelt Hilleman Academy) becoming Roosevelt Hilleman Middle/High School before finally being detached from City Control completely following annexation by Hyde Park which finally became their own municipality effective date unknown Formerly Highland Park

The first settlers in Elmhurst were Methodist Episcopalians who arrived in 1847. A post office was established in 1851 and named Pemberton after John Pemberton, a U.S. Representative from Illinois during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1878, developer Julius Rosenwald donated land to establish Elmhurst Park as an experimental agricultural community for black people in search of better working conditions and educational opportunities than they experienced on their home continent of Africa or Europe. Rosenwald also donated money to create a public school system that would serve all of Cook County and its surrounding townships as well as provide education for African Americans through high school and college level programs culminating in professional training under white professionals such as lawyers, physicians, engineers, bankers and merchants. The opening of schools by African Americans helped break down color barriers within American society which had been preventing them from achieving equal access to education opportunities since before the Revolutionary War. In short order, both black students and white students began attending public schools with many being inspired to pursue higher education due to these new opportunities available to them at an early age thanks to Rosenwald's charity towards colored society
