Elk Grove, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in Elk Grove were Sauk and Potawatomi Indians. In 1824, two white men named Andrew Kapp and James McNamara bought land in what is now Elk Grove from the Sauk and Potawatomi Indians for $100 per acre. They named their new settlement after John Cropsey's farmstead in New York City – Cropsey's Point on the Calumet River. The first settler in Elk Grove was Isaac Aspinwall, who arrived on July 17, 1825. He built a log cabin near where he now lives on Wabash Avenue. In 1827–28, three brothers named Levi Strauss moved from Danville to start a flour mill at what is now Elmhurst Road and Harrison Street in Elk Grove Township (now Elmhurst Park). It was the first successful business venture of its kind in America; it became known as Strauss Mill Company. In 1830 or 1831, Samuel Ralston founded Springfield Armory with his brother David Ralston and others east of downtown Chicago. When arms manufacturing began to become important during the American Civil War (1861-1865), both Elk Grove and Springfield were among the first places to produce firearms for Union forces; over 300 rifles were made here alone between 1861-1865. In 1865–66 saw an influx of Germans due to strikes by German farmers against USowned crops duringthe American Civil War; many of these settlers settled in what is now Elmhurst Park along with other Germans who had come to Illinois from Michigan Territory during that time period Elk Groves post office was established on November 6th 1865 by George Hennepin under license from General Order No 1 issued by Ulysses S Grant commanding general of all Union troops at Fort Dearborn Heights north of Chicago . Hennepin served as Postmaster until his death on October 16th 1889 The community experienced rapid growth following World War II when many veterans returned home: production increased an average of 50% every year from 1945 through 1950 because there were no peacetime restrictions on military production then Elks grove annexed Crystal Lake township January 1st 1947
The town of Elk Grove, Illinois was founded in 1820 by James Hargrave and his wife Deborah. The first settler in the area was John Marshall who arrived in 1824. In 1830, Elijah Bemis moved to Elk Grove from rural Lake County and set up a sawmill. A post office was established in 1831, and the town began to incorporate as a village on April 15, 1835. The first mayor of Elk Grove was John Waddell. Elk Grove operated under a two-member board of trustees until May 1, 1860 when it became an elected municipality with a single trustee. On November 3, 1865, the town voted to change its name to Chicago Heights after annexation by Chicago.
