Elk Grove is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,865 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Elk Grove were Frenchmen in 1673 and Jesuit missionaries in 1763. George Washington visited the city on July 4, 1795 while he was searching for a wintering place for the American army during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army. Wisconsin's first permanent settler arrived in 1839 and named him John Sargent after himself and his father. A post office called Elmhurst was established in 1845, but it was moved to its present location three years later. In 1854, a group of farmers organized what became known as "The First Farmers' Association" to promote agriculture and improve road access beyond their own village near Geneva Lake. The association’s goal was to build a road from Geneva Lake eastward toChicago so that other farmers could easily get supplies needed for their crops and animals. The first section of Route 66, now I-55 running through Elk Grove & neighboring townships was built between Glen Ellyn & Elmhurst along this same path; today's route 66 starts out at Elmhurst Boulevard and heads northeast before turning east on I-555 (now Eisenhower) following the old alignment of Route 66 until it intersects with I-355mn north of Chicago proper just outside Elks Grove Township boundaries In 1888, J H Cray bought land northwest of town from Drinker & Ryan under an agreement that allowed him to use it only for housing developments until he paid them back with interest over 10 years plus installments totaling $15 000 per year . In 1898 he started building Crayville which soon became one of the largest housing projects in America . When World War II began Eagle Ford Oil Company had taken over some production from Crayville so muchso that Crowell decided to build another housing project called Prairie View A&M University which would house students and employees only .
