Elk Grove was a large and sparsely populated village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The community was founded in 1868 by David Baird and his wife Sarah Ann (née Wilkinson). Elk Grove was named after the grove of sycamores located in nearby Deerfield Township. The first post office opened in 1870, and the population of Elk Grove reached a peak of 1,500 in 1903. By 1920, the population had decreased to fewer than 350 residents; however, it continued to grow rapidly through the 1940s and 1950s as new suburban development developed near the village. In 1969, Elk Grove merged with nearby Deerfield Township to form the larger Village of Deerfield Township. In recent years, Elmhurst College has been expanding its campus into what used to be part of Elk Grove Village; this has led to increased traffic congestion on I-290 near Elmhurst College's campus as cars race to get onto Route 59A which leads from Elmhurst College towards downtown Elk Grove.
