Elk Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is adjacent to the city of Chicago on the west side. Elk Grove has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification Cfa), abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The town began as a farming community about miles southeast of downtown Chicago. In 1892, entrepreneur George Pullman donated land in what is now Elk Grove to establish his new townsite named after him, pulling other investors with him such as JAPANESE BUSINESSMAN HIROSHI KAWAI and WILLIAM FERGUSON Jr., PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BANKING COMPANY. By 1902, Elkhorn Heights had also been established nearby and by 1910 Elmhurst had followed suit. In 1916, Elmhurst merged with Pullman's other townsite called Arlington Heights to form Elk Grove Village – one of the first planned communities in Chicagoland. Elmhurst remained an independent municipality until it merged into village status in 1961; Arlington Heights became a suburb of Chicago following that merger. On July 1, 1907 – just over 20 years after its founding – Elk Grove opened its doors to residents for their first communal picnic which included games like croquet and football from local schools while also providing access to public land for grazing purposes; this event still takes place annually today as part of Community Day at Village Park! Elvira Matson (1875-1955) was born in Oregon but moved with her family to Winnetka when she was 8 years old because her parents were troubled by anti-immigrant sentiment in America during that time period; they were not accepted by their neighbours until she met her husband there! After moving back east he started his own business importing wines from France which led to him becoming wine dealer for various restaurants including The Sloppy Joe’s restaurant where he introduced Prohibition-era wines - something no one else could do back then! During World War II she worked as secretary/wife to Congressman Emanuel Celler who did important work inside Congress helping provide financial stability during wartime however shortly afterwards she fell ill and died suddenly leaving behind 4 sons who battled hard against cancer together before eventually both dying young too: Emanuel Celler III (1920-1986), Richard Matson (1925-2002), Anthony Matson (1929-2007) & Howard Wmston Matson IV (1945-) . One can only imagine what would have happened if she’d lived longer? Anyway - wowzers...the list goes on!:). Today much of that history can be found buried under streets names like Pritzker Drive or even more recently First Avenue!!! :)

The first settler in what is now Elmhurst was John Schieffer. He built a cabin on the banks of the Chicago River. The village of Elk Grove was organized in 1868 and became part of the city of Chicago. The Village of Elk Grove was originally called Prairie du Chien and later changed to Elk Grove Village. The name comes from an area near the village where there were many elks that were hunted down and killed by early settlers because they were coveted game animals. The first school in Elmhurst was built in 1847 by Mr. Schieffer and is still used today as an elementary school for students from grades kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1870, City Council decided to build a new school at this location instead of purchasing land from parents who would not have their children attend school inside their homes due to fear of diseases brought over by immigrants arriving on arrival at the new Ulysses S Grant Bridge across the Chicago River. In 1886, Elmhurst had its own police department which served as a backup to city services until 1915 when responsibility for law enforcement within Elmhurst passed into municipal control under then-Mayor George Wohlgemuth. In 1916, Mayor Wohlgemuth announced plans to move Elmhurst out of downtownChicago so that it could become more self-sufficient with its own fire brigade, police force, library and other civic services unavailable or difficult to obtain elsewhere in downtownChicago due to zoning regulations preventing buildings taller than 100 feet (30 meters) from being constructed south of State Street between Randolph Street and South Water Street). This plan failed when Mayor Harry Jaffe refused to allow any development along Randolph Street north of State Street without giving up some rights reserved for DowntownChicago businesses such as movie theaters and restaurants). Elkhorn Road–the current street running perpendicular to Randolph Street–was laid out as part of this proposed redevelopment program known as “The transformations” which aimed at bringing life back into newly revitalized areas like North Side Settlement (now Near West Side), Oak Park/Summit Hill, Lincoln Park/South Shore Center, Austin Heights/Wicker Park etc..
