The first gun target in Elk Grove was a blacksmith shop, located on the east side of town. The first rifle target in Elk Grove was a cannon, which was destroyed in 1836. In 1872, a rifle range and pistol range were built on Elm Street by Amos S. Whitney. The ranges were used for hunting and shooting at deer, rabbits, wild pigs and other game animals. In 1907, the Illinois Rifle Association built an outdoor gym on the west side of town to teach gunnery to young men and women. In 1912, a second outdoor gym was built next door to the first gym on Elm Street. This gym became known as the “Chicago Armory” because it served as home of Chicago’s national guard from 1916-1918. In 1927-28, electric guns were installed at both of the abovementioned gyms to provide more realistic targets for shooting practice. These guns allowed people to shoot pistols without having to take off their clothes or use any other form of protection. In 1934-35, two new rifle ranges opened up in Elk Grove: one on Eberhart Road and another on Palmer Avenue near Valley View Elementary School. These ranges served as training ground for many future police officers and military personnel who were recruited during World War II. In 1949-50, two new handguns were added to the arsenal: a single shot revolver called the Colt Python (1949) and a centerfire handgun called Smith & Wesson Model 3 (.22 caliber).
Elk Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located just east of the city's downtown and immediately south of Oak Park. The first settlers to what is now Elk Grove were white people who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky and Tennessee. There had been a few Indian raids near this area since the early 1800s but these had usually resulted in only minor damage or acquisition of goods by the raiders themselves rather than any loss or injury to either side. In 1836, John Hennepin purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land northwest of Chicago on which he built a home and began farming his new purchase. He named his property "Elk Grove". By 1840, there were fifteen homes and two hundred acres (100 ha) in Elmhurst Township, north of Chicago on which other farmers also started farms. It wasn't until 1855 that someone endowed with an estate at Elkshire Farms decided to make use of it for agricultural purposes as a training ground for young men from across Illinois under direction from Snively & Co., grain merchants who operated out of Liberty Hall on North State Street in River Forest outside Chicago during those years. That person was Colonel Augustus Muhlenberg, one-time director general (1857-1859) and founder (1837)of Northwestern University

Elk Grove is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,653 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The village became an incorporated town in 1907. The name "Elk Grove" may be derived from the Sauk word elkhage meaning "oak tree." Elk Creek flows through the village and its eastern border is formed by Elkhorn Woods Cemetery. In 1847, when the first settlers arrived in this part of Illinois, they named their new community after a large oak near their home on Elk Creek. One early settler said that this naming occurred because he saw an elk grazing near his farmstead and thought it looked like an ancient oak. After years of growth and development within Elk Grove, it became one of the most heavily populated villages in Cook County by 1930. By then, Elmhurst had annexed portions of what were then known as Pioneer Township to form their own municipality; however, much of what is now Elmhurst was still within Elk Grove's boundaries until annexation took place during the late 1990s. During World War II, many residents moved to military housing located along recently acquired lands adjacent to Soldier Field in downtownChicago due to shortages of housing anywhere else in Chicago at that time. However, only about 50% of all households actually relocated during wartime; most residents chose instead to stay where they were or simply store goods collected during peacetime shortages - these stockpiles lasted into 1946! A number of businesses opened up following war-time prosperity including a post office (opened Dec 1946), a grocery store (opened Feb 1947), two banks (both opened Apr 1948), several small shops (including one owned by Mayor Harry Ziegler himself) as well as three movie theaters which screens Hollywood films until 1949: also opening was Ralston’s department store which would become one of Chicagos largest employers for many years afterwards followed by Janssen Pharmacy which merged with CVS Corporation shortly thereafter – both companies remain headquartered today within walking distance of each other on North Michigan Avenue just east of Kinnickinnic River! In addition to these major businesses there were numerous tiny stores and restaurants dotting Elmwood Avenue throughout its length before 1978 when larger shopping malls replaced them altogether – making little mention hereabouts except for *the* massive* KFC restaurant located just off Milwaukee Ave across from Nixon Presidential Library & Museum! Finally reaching its present-day incarnation as a bedroom community for Schaumburg Village after being ravaged by fires over 10 successive years beginning around 2000 has done nothing but increase residential densities over anything previously experienced within town limits since complete reclamation began!!!
