The 1860 US Census listed 2,611 muzzleloader rifle owners in Elk Grove Township. Firearms ownership increased in America during the 19th century as gun laws became more restrictive. Elk Grove is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,534 at the 2000 census. The name "Elk Grove" comes from the location of an out-of-the way farmstead on the banks of the Chicago River. The first settlers in what is now Elk Grove were farmers who came to the area in 1855. They named their land "Elk Grove," after a large tree near their farmstead that they thought looked like an elk. The first school in Elmhurst was operated by members of the church at Arlington and Prospect Streets. In 1857, another group of farmers arrived and started a school at 178th Street and Cicero Avenue. That same year, Elmhurst became part of Elk Grove Township when it was organized. In 1901, a post office called Elmhurst was established in accordance with state law; it remained in operation until 1971. In 1907, Elk Grove Township Annexed Hinsdale Township which had been formed from parts of Aurora and Elgin townships east of Rock Island Road. Hinsdale Township was renamed Plainfield township on July 1, 1907; however, no change took place to the name until 1912 when Plainfield again became part of Elk Grove Township when it was organized as a result of annexation by Elmhurst into DuPage County. On November 3rd, 1913 ELK GROVE TOWNSHIP VOTE TO REFUSE TO APPEAL A COURT DECISION THAT THEIR WORD “ELK GRAVE” WAS USED IN THE NAME OF A ROAD ON THE AREA AND NOT ELK GROVE AFTER ALL? It seems as though there may have been some confusion about what exactly happened back in 1913 – according to residents who lived near where Route 66 now intersects with I-80 (and remember seeing “elkgrave” written on road signs), there seems to have been some question as to whether or not they actually agreed to refuse to appeal that decision - because if so why did it take so long for things to finally get sorted out? According to various sources including an article from 1993 entitled “Eldorado: How Our Roads got Their Name” by Bob Kappelman (published by Southern Illinois University Carbondale Press), it seems as though this bit of history might be lost among many people today – but interestingly enough even if all we know is what has surface recently (based off research done over several decades ago), that still gives us quite something interesting right here! Anyway…back story short: On November 3rd 1913 (3 years after annexing Hinsdale) plainfield township voted notto appeal a court decision that their word “elkgrave” was used instead of “elksgrave” on behalf of their citizens while living within ELG grove village/township boundaries). This vote may have been due simply to confusion given how new maps were being created at this time – perhaps someone didn’t realize that elksgravesue would eventually become rte 66? Who knows?!

Elk Grove is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is located on the banks of the Chicago River. The community was platted in 1872 by George Nicolay and James A. Walker as a village to serve as a commercial center on the north side of the river. It became a town in 1903 and remained so until its annexation by Chicago in 1955. During World War II, Elmhurst Lake was used as a training ground for military personnel from Kane County. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made it one of two sites chosen for experimental testing of his new weapon, Manhattan Project nuclear weapons. The test site has been leased by various businesses since then and remains inactive today; however, some remnant evidence of this history can be found at nearby Lemont Elementary School which features an exhibit about the Manhattan Project including photographs and memorabilia from that time period
Elk Grove was laid out in 1848 as part of the Township of Elk Grove Village. The first post office was established in 1851, and the township was dissolved in 1872. In 1903, Elk Grove Village was established and the township re-established.
